Question regarding fall yard decorations...

Okay....my husband told me to ask the DIS because you all would surely have an answer for my question.

I have a black thumb, so instead of flowers in my yard I make seasonal displays. For the fall I have bales of hay, scarecrows and pumpkins. This part of North Carolina has received an abundance of rain this season and my scarecrows are looking sad. Two of them have styrofoam heads and I can see mold growing on there.

Is there a way to get rid of the mold or to prevent it from spreading more? If not I'm going to have to trash the cute scarecrows and I don't want to do that.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....once mold sets in, you are done. Spores fly by the millions...

Can you replace the heads?

You could try some vinegar and leave in the sun and dry. Bleach would kill the mold but would discolor/fade your scarecrow. Could you put new heads on them and try to save them that way? These are just ideas hopefully someones else will know for sure.

yeah - unless it is something you can treat with vinegar or bleach, you are probably out of luck...sorry!

we have a scarecrow for Halloween - I am over the top about that stuff and bring them in when it rains and at night when it gets damp to let them air out.....but that is me and I understand others not wanting to do that....

Thanks all! I'll try the vinegar and see if that helps. Thankfully I bought the scarecrows on sale for about 7.00 each, so it's not a great loss, but they are cute. I'll have to remember next year to take them up when we're expecting a heavy rain.

Can you pre-treat them with vinegar to prevent the mold?
