Question re: Holding Points

I currently have reservations for two separate weeks...one in March and one in June. There is a chance the March trip might have to be cut a couple days short but we will not know till the last minute. I understand those points will go into holding inside the 30 day window.

My Question: If that happens, can those "holding" points be used for the June reservation that has already been made so that I can bank the extra 10-15 points I am left with at the end of the year?

"Holding Account" points may only be used to make a reservation 60 days in advance. You could not use them for June until sometime in April.

In the past you would be limited to using the Holding points onky if there was availability in June (if there was already a waitlist you could not use those points). Some had reported being allowed to reallocate the Holding points for the June reservation - thus freeing up other points used. It would seem that this may be dependent on the CM you work with at the time as it's not really fair to those on the waitlist, but you won't know until you try.

Hopefully you'll be able to keep everything as it is now and won't need to worry about the "Holding Account".

Enjoy! :)

Thanks for the answer Doc. That makes sense. But how would reallocating the points be unfair to someone on a waitlist if I already have the reservation anyway?

I also hope this is a non-issue but I would like to know in case it ever comes up for real.

The purpose of the "Holding Account" is a penalty for cancelling on short notice. If someone is allowed to use those points ahead of someone already on the waitlist, that's not really the intended purpose of the "Holding Account". In that case, you would not be subjected to any inconvenience at all (other than a phone call to MS) and would have full use of all of your points even though you cancelled on short notice while someone else is still waiting patiently for the same dates.

If there is no waitlist, MS will be able to use the Holding Account points without any issue. If there is a waitlist, substituting those points displaces the intent of both the Holding Account and the waitlist.

I'm sure it has happened and it's likely someone will report their ability to use Holding points in this fashion, but that does not make it fair or the actual policy in place. It is in the hands of MS - if they will allow it, you will be able to do it!

Thanks for the explaination. Now I understand what you were saying. I was not wanting to be unfair to the waitlist, I just wanted to be sure I understood. Thanks.

We just completed a reallocation of points within the 60 days at BCV, I’m not sure if there was a waitlist, but DVC allowed me to do it none the less. Is it fair, well I’m sure we can debate that for quite awhile, but since the CM allowed us to complete this transaction, I see have no issue with others doing it. Just my take on the subject.
