Question re:appetizers in DD plan

Can you substitute a salad for an appetizer as part of the Disney Dining plan. I don't mean a full dinner salad, but at an Italian restaurant I would prefer a mixed field green salad to an appetizer. I compaired the prices and most of the time the apps actually cost more.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Last trip I was on the dining plan. My friend had salad as her appetizer at a few of the meals including the italian restaurant in Epcot. I think it depends on the restaurant as they all have different rules. I would assume though if the salad costs less then they should be flexible.
