If I purchase a contract today with a UY of October..... is today considered 2016's points, since we haven't reached October yet?

Since a lot of resale contracts show no points in the current UY am I able to book a trip for after October? Does the system pick up that even though I don't have points today I will have points after October first?... assuming I purchased a contract from someone that did not borrow from the next year.

Don't think about it that way. Your points from now until the contract expires are always in your account. They're available for use during your use year.

Yes, we are in the Oct 2016 UY. Everything is based on when you travel and not when you book. As long as you have the eligible points in the membership, then you can book. So, if the contract is out of 2016 points but has 2017 and beyond you can book travel even now by "borrowing" your 2017 points.

Points can be used to travel during the UY of the points, can be borrowed to travel during the UY prior to the points, and banked for travel in the UY after the points. When you go to book, they system will look at the UY you are traveling (not when you are calling) and use any banked points that are valid, current UY points, and then if needed, borrow points from the next UY.
