I'm not sure if I should post this here or on the Resort boards. DGD just started crawling and DD is wondering what to do while they are in the room at the resort. We are staying at Pop, and she doesn't want to put her on the floor as she knows the carpeting is very dirty and full of germs. She was hoping that she wouldn't start crawling until they got back from the trip (we're leaving in about 3 weeks :yay:) but DGD didn't want to wait! LOL!

DD wanted me to post this question to see how others have handled a baby crawling in the room and what they did to keep them off the floor. She doesn't want to keep her in the pack and play all the time but also doesn't want her crawling on a dirty carpet.

Any suggestions are welcome.

TIA

bring along 3 or 4 king size sheets from home and lay them ontop of the carpetin. We did this, but used queen size. HTH.

I was the same way. On our vacation last October, DD#2 had just started crawling....she was 7 months old. I didnt want her on that germy carpet. But ultimately, I just had to suck it up. We were there for a week and I couldnt keep the poor kid confined for a full week. She was in the stroller or being carried all day long, and when we were at the room, she just wanted down. I just tried to wash her hands with those antibacterial wipes often. She didnt get sick after our trip, so that was a plus LOL! I didnt like the idea of crawling on the carpet, but there wasnt too much I could do.

DS was in lots of hotel rooms as a crawler and honestly I didn't sweat it. DisneyWorld is a huge public place there will be germs. I was just diligent about washing his hands before eating. Eventually kids put everything in their mouth, dirt, rocks, dog food ;)

I like the idea of the sheets. I would have never thought of that! :thumbsup2 I have plenty of old king size sheets that I can bring for her. It might be not be totally clean because her older sisters will probably be walking on it but I guess it's better than crawling on the carpet!

We will make sure to bring plenty of antibacterial wipes. DD's husband is a chemist so they have plenty of that stuff around. He is the one that is concerned about this since he knows all about germs and he would like Disney to clean the carpets before they come. I doubt they would do this but they are considering asking. All they can say is no.

Last year we had so much sickness on our trip (stomach virus - 6 of us, 2 had colds, and 1 had pinkeye - all after we got there  ) and we just want to make sure the kids stay healthy this year. I hope you can understand our concerns!

Thanks for the ideas!

You can put a request on your reservation for a special cleaning of your room for medical reasons. My DH ans DS4 both have asthma and I always get the special cleaning to prevent allergies. It wont kill all germs but some additional effort can be made.

Thanks for the suggestion. DD does have asthma, but the main reason would be because of the baby.

DS was 9 months the first time we went, and I would not let him on the floor at all. We were there for a week, and thinking back it really wasn't too hard to keep him off. I think it helped that we weren't in the room all that much...as soon as he got up, I got him dressed and we left. At night, he usually was asleep when we came back and he just went to bed.

When we were in the room for awhile, he just played on the bed with toys, and one of us just kept an eye on him, so he didn't fall or crawl off.

The first time we went to Disney, my youngest (who was 2 at the time) contracted norovirus, as it was going around on the Disney cruise ships. The First Aid people contacted the front desk of our hotel (Poly) and they sent a mousekeeper up to do a very thorough cleaning of our room so the rest of us wouldn't get sick. She washed everything down with bleach and replaced ALL of the linens. She was wonderful. So, moral of the story, can't hurt to ask what they can do.

Is there anyway to take a walker ? that is what we have always done when traveling and had babies that were crawling. I know you're concerned about keeping her confined though, but it might be something that could keep her happy.

pull the bedspread back (also very germy) & let her crawl all over the beds - of course that means somebody is on "crawl duty" so she doesn't go over the side- this is what I've done with all 4 of my kids. I agree with an earlier poster about limited time spent in the rooms - the worst time was in the morning when the kids were roaring and ready to go.

I also agree that there are millions of germs everywhere that we don't see & they actually benefit our immune systems. But.... I still wouldn't let my kids crawl the floor in public places

I may be the minority here...but let her crawl.Who cares about the floor, as long is she isn't licking it? I think we get too paranoid about germs .I remember as kids crawling and playing in dirt,on floor of hotel rooms, the park ,etc. There is such a thing as TOO CLEAN.I swaer, i took my daughter to the park one day, and this woman whipped out her hand sanitizer ever ytime her kid touched anything( I mean anything)

Oh, yeah..definitely take the bedspread off! (I guess I'm a germophobe...;) )

I totally agree!!!!!!!

As a mom of four, if I was constantly on the lookout for any of my kids touching anything unseemly, well, I don't think I'd ever get much accomplished! I assume this baby is an only child...just think ahead...what are you gonna do one day when you're in the middle of changing a giant poop on your baby and your 5 year old runs into the house, "Look Mom, a dead bird!" as he hands it to you! If you address the bird, baby hands touch poop. If you keep changing the diaper, well, bird flu anyone?? Oh wait, the 3 year old just put her hands in the toilet! Germs happen. Part of life.

We've stayed in hotels often since my oldest was a crawler, and I say just let 'em go and try not to worry too much about it. I know the thought of what's on the floor is pretty gross, and I guess the sheet thing is a good idea, but honestly, there are MUCH bigger things to worry about in this life than germs!

When we traveled in hotels this summer our DD was crawling. We had requested a crib/pack and play each time and we only let her down to play in that. I didnt want her crawling around on that carpet. We would also let her play on the beds if we were right there. I would get a Pack and Play from the resort and let her crawl around and play in there.

Exactly My dd is 4y/o.when she was a baby ,I let her crawl on the floor, hotel floors, play in the park,in the grass, dirt whathave you.I cleaned her when she iwas done. She has been sick( colds, diarrhea, flu ) a total of 5 times her whole life.I don't go nuts with the sanitizer either.Kids won't die of they get a little dirty.I admit the thought grossed me out initially, and then my grandma yelled at me .." you kids today are too darn clean for your own good"

Check carefully around the beds and under the moveable furniture for dropped small items (coins, pills, bobby pins, etc.), then turn her loose. Hotel rooms are vacuumed daily.

Just put her down and let her go. Why make yourself crazy during your vacation. As long as she isn't sucking on the rug let her have fun. Wash her up when she is done playing. I let my son down when he was crawling and one time when we were in Mk, we were in the camera store and he was crawling around and Capt. Hook and Mr. Smee walked in and loved it, they jumped down on the floor with him and was crawling and playing with him he had a blast. I will never forget it.

As a recovering germophobe, blessed with a finger sucking baby, I was faced with this dilemna when DD was 11 months. Someone suggested the socks to me and I wish I could remember who, because I could kiss them! The carpet in our room was disgusting!!! Saved my trip. Just get the stretchy baby kind that are nice and tight at the ankle. DD was a little confused at first, but didn't mess with them. Certainly worth a shot. HTH!
