Question On Adding Parents to My Membership

I use to live with my parents and so we all had the same address on our driver's licences so that could get the Annual Pass DVC discount. They recently retired to upstate NY and so are no longer eligible for the DVC discount. If I add them to my membership - will they be able to take advantage of the DVC discount which is now increasing to $149?

There is going to be a charge to add them to the deed, not sure how much. One thing to think about - do you have siblings? If you add them to the deed, their portion would become part of their estate.

Yes I have two sisters and considering I paid for the timeshare myself that wouldn't be acceptable to me. Thanks for the advice.

I don't think joint owners have to have the same address. If she adds them to the deed, they would be members in their own right.

I also think that joint owners can have different addresses and will receive the same perks.

You are right. My DD and I both have different addresses and we are both owners. Our deeds have right of survivorship and is addressed in my will. I have more than 1 child, but my other children are not interested in WDW and wanted no part of the DVC purchase. I would suggest the OP speak with an attorney and/or financial planner to cover all of the issues that may arise.

As someone who's parents have both recently passed away, I have 5 siblings, I can tell you the PP's advice is golden! Never add them to something you own without advice on all the legal aspects. As per whatever your parents will states your siblings are entitled to their share of your parents assets. And even wills can be disputed.....it's just better to never do something like this just for the ticket discount.

25 points is the minimum one can own. This is a good strategy to get the benefits with minimal risk and commitment but I'm not sure that buying in their name is a good choice for many. You never know the choices young people will make and the messes they'll get themselves into. Likely a better choice is to buy in your name in such a way you can give it to them later OR to use a will or trust to pass things on to them.

OP, simply buying 25 points in your name then changing the title or buying a small package resale and titling it differently would give you the options you seek. Just realize it will be a separate contract and not integrated with what you now own.

Associate members get no perks or discounts. You wouldn't have a blue member card for those memberships. Are your kids going to be happy to be saddled with dues each year? Or would you pay for those as well? If that's the case, then put yourself on as a member, not an associate.

A problem here is that only DVC can split an ownership into separate ownerships. It says so in your deed.

A simple solution is to simply add the names (and addresses, of course) of any interested family members. This will get discounted APs for everyone. The drawback is splitting the liability for annual fees, and refereeing requests for use of points.
