Question for Those With Verizon DSL

Currently I have Comcast Cable as my internet service provider. Tonight I am switching over to Verizon DSL for the $$$$ savings. We have Verizon at one of our offices and it seems to work just as well as cable for less money.

Now, with Comcast, I went out and installed my own Norton Internet Security Suite (firewall, virus protection, spam blocker, parental controls, etc) because I felt what Comcast offered wasn't doing the job. It is active until August 23, 2005. So, when I switch to Verizon I will have "coverage" for a month.

A guy at work tells me that Verizon comes with McAfee that works just fine and that I wouldn't need to have an additional security software program. Is this true?

We're hooking up Verizon DSL today, I'll let you know tonight.

We are relatively new with Verizon's DSL and truth be told, we've had several problems that nobody at tech support can seem to fix.

That is just one of the reasons we are considering switching to a new company called Cavalier. They claim their DSL speeds are faster, but who knows.

Sorry, I know this doesn't answer your question, just chiming in!

We have Verizon DSL and have to say I haven't been terribly impressed with their tech support. Usually I can handle things on my own since I worked in the industry, but used their support to see how it was. (I have several people for whom I repair computers & it's always good to know what can be handled by tech support instead of paying me.) I've had them close trouble tickets without doing anything at all, I've been ignored, I've gotten misdirection.....but on the other hand I've had people who really knew what they were doing. It seems to be like most places - the luck of the draw.

About the McAfee protection...in order to get this you have to install MSN Premium. We couldn't install it on DD's computer because it only met the minimum specs and frankly MSN doesn't run well at the minimum. DH didn't install it for other reasons. So out of the 3 main computers in the house, only mine runs McAfee Anti-Virus and Firewall. DH & DD both run AVG anti-virus and use the Windows XP firewall.

Back in June I picked up a really nasty worm. No one else on the network was affected - even though we were all on at the time. The McAfee firewall tripped & wouldn't allow me access to the Internet until we had dealt with the problem. As near as I can figure, the worm got through at the point the anti-virus software had updated itself & turned itself off waiting for me to re-boot. (I now watch that more carefully!)

In the past I always used Norton, but stopped when the last update I bought could not be re-installed a 3rd time. (My old hard drive died 2ce & I had to replace it.) I wasn't willing to pay for Norton again. :headache:

I have had verizon dsl for 2 yrs now and I am quite happy. :sunny: I have no problem with their tech support. Yes, if you install the MSN Premium (free) with the verizon, you have the McAffee virus protection along with their firewall. There has only been 2 times that I have had a problem that has taken more than 1 phone call to repair. I wouldn't hesitate to get it. :flower:

Very happy with Verizon DSL here (2 years and counting). The two times we called tech support they were friendly, accurate and competent.

We also have it at work. The business across the hall has Comcast Cable Modem and it is out at least once a day. This week, it was completely out for 3 days straight and Comcast "customer service" was wretched about it. Did not care one whit that a business could not communicate for 3 days. They have had enough and are switching to Verizon.
