I am giving DD9 a Nook Color for her birthday. She has learning issues, so I will download fun apps that will help her her learn from the Amazon Appstore (I will root via an sd card so she has access to the Amazon apps). I own a Nook tablet for which I have downloaded a lot of free game apps. Am I better off opening a separate Amazon account for her so she is limited in her app content (and I can use the purchase of apps as a reward system), or just add her device to my account? I read on another thread that I could maybe password protect the wifi, so she can't stream (we have Netflix) or purchase without my logging in. Is there any other way to lock out purchasing or password lock the screen? I want her to have to ask me to purchase even free apps and to watch a movie on Netflix, so I can tell her if its scary, inappropriate, etc. Thanks!

My 9 year old has a Nook and she can't buy any Apps or books without a password. She can access Netflix without a problem though.

I think the only way you are going to keep her off the Netflix is to sign out every time she get done viewing so it will ask for a log in the next time she wants to watch. Mine doesn't automatically sign me out unless I haven't used it in a while.

My 11 and 14 year olds have Nook Colors. I haven't bothered to lock them down at all. They know they have to ask me before making any purchases so that I can approve content. We don't have netflix but even when it comes to TV and movies they know that TV-MA or R rated items they aren't allowed to watch without confirming with me and even PG-13 we discuss.

I know this doesn't work for everybody but it's been working for us. My kids are rather OCD rules followers because of their own particular developmental differences so maybe that's part of why it works for us.

I will note that by having all of us share an account it does mean that I have to watch some of the, uh, more adult content that I may wish to choose for myself because I don't want it automatically downloaded to them at the same time so I have to do without. This is where separate accounts would have been handy.

My 13 year old has a kindle. I just set him up with his own account, so he wouldn't accidentally spend my money. He had a gift card to start with, and I used a prepaid credit card to verify the account.

This being said, he has a lot of freedom on the kindle. I just wanted it separate from what I was doing. But, he is a rule follower, so there are no issues.
