To be fair, Americans don't actually *make* tea in a microwave; they just use it to heat the water, then pretty much follow the same procedure BPT2 described. The particular also add a porcelain spoon to the water to allow it to bubble and prevent superheating. The tea itself doesn't normally get microwaved.

The tea is very seldom Barry's in the US, and that is a drawback.

My mother used to split the difference when making single servings of tea with a teabag. She used 2 empty cups/mugs; steeped the tea in one, put milk in the bottom of the other one, poured the tea from one to the other and drank from the one with the milk in, so that it was made "milk first" as you do when pouring from a teapot.

True confession time: I don't drink tea, at all -- I despise the aroma and taste of tea. However, it was my childhood chore to make it, both hot and iced, and I also made it for years in restaurants, so I've still got technique.

Adjacent question ... do they drink iced tea in the UK like we do here in the US?

I love a glass of iced tea in the afternoon, even when it's cold outside. There is a brand I'll buy in the store already made (I end up doing that 2-3x per week), or else if I make it myself I use one black tea bag and one bag either peach or raspberry tea, steep it 3-5 minutes, pour over ice. Almost always unsweetened for me, though if I'm at a place where they just give me a cup and I put the tea in myself (like a fountain drink), I'll sometimes add just a little bit of the sweetened kind.

I like hot tea as well, and had a long phase where I had it multiple times a day, but lately it's decaf coffee in the morning and iced tea & water in the afternoon.

No we don’t drink iced tea in the UK. You can buy bottles of Lipton’s Iced Tea but it’s not particularly a popular drink like in the US.

They do iced tea in places like Starbucks I think but like SnowBeast says, it isn't particularly popular. I don’t I know a single person who drinks iced tea.
