A question about ultrasounds NOT related to pregnancies..

I need to have one done on Monday to check things out Ive been feeling.Dr said after my physical things felt fine..but I told her I still have symptoms that dont feel right so she ordered an ultrasound.

Now, she told me to drink 32 oz of water before and not suppose to go to the bathroom 2 hrs before:confused3
Ive had 3 children, and 4 miscarriages. I have had my share of ultrasounds. Apart from my first pregnancy, none of the other drs office's/hosptials made a big deal about the water thing. With my last child I had about 9 ultrasounds, and nobody said anything about water. As a matter of fact I had asked the US tech about it, she said mostly they can see with out the bladder being full, but if not then she tells patients to drink a bottle of water while sitting there..

Honestly I can't hold it for 2 hrs, expecially after drinking all that water. They said no bathroom for two hrs previous and to drink 32 oz one hour before?

Does this sound right? How come all my other ultrasounds nobody pushed the whole water thing, and were able to see everyting???

Anybody exerience ultrasounds with OUT being pregnant and was pushed to drink all the water???

Yeah, I've had a couple of check for cysts and they've always made me do the water. It sucked. They said it had to do with being able to distinguish the bladder from everything else they were looking for.

The best idea I can give you is to talk to your doctor. She may be able to arrange an alternate test, or perscribe a bladder medication that will make it easier to hold it (depending on what your "issues" are).

Well, if your u/s is related to your uterus, the water in the bladder definitely helps them out... However, if your bladder is empty they can always do the "internal" ultrasound and get to your uterus via your cervix.

Did you have an internal or an external ultrasound for this?

Thats the thing, she put the order in for the trans******l one:confused3

I just find it odd, if its going via the inside;),why the water? Im 45, so I cant hold it, as much as could like I was 20;)

That's weird. I had an internal ultrasound about a year ago in the ER (thanks to a lovely ovarian cyst) and they actually had me use the restroom like a million times beforehand so I could empty out my bladder completely.

I usually get both (get them once a year, in general).

They do the full bladder one (external) and then I get to pee before they do the internal one.

Seems weird to do the internal one with a full bladder.

hi.. I had a trans v j-j. last year. Yes they required water.. I had to drink more than 64 ounces as 32 did not do the trick for me. I am post menapausal and was having some problems. This allowed them to find out if there were any problems with the uterine lining etc.

I have had my fair share in the last year due to cysts. Never told a thing about water in fact I am always to told to empty bladder before having it done.

All internal with the last one done two weeks ago.

Pretty soon all pieces and parts will be gone and no more cyst issues :cool1::cool1::cool1: LOL can you tell I am excited?

wow, how confusing, some of you needed to drink the water for the internal, some were told empty bladder:confused3

I've had 3 non-pregnant pelvic u/s, and tons of pregnant ones. For the pregnant ones, I only had to drink water for the early ones, but past 18 weeks, no water needed.

For the non-pregnant, still had to drink the water. If your bladder isn't full enough, they won't be able to do it (this is coming from someone who drank the water too late, and had to sit and drink in the waiting room until I felt I was going to burst). Then, after that u/s, I was told to use the bathroom so they could do the trans******l. They are going to want to do both.

You might try not holding it for 2 hours, but be prepared to wait and drink.

I just had an internal one done last month. They didn't make me drink any water but told me I could not go to the washroom 2 hours before. Then they look l, and then tell me to go empty my bladder for another look. :confused3

Even when I was pregnant I could not drink all that water and they still saw everything fine. I guess if you don't have enough in you they will make you drink and wait.

I used to have to do the water thing in early pregnancy, up to the mid pregnancy one with my old obgyn. New one, no water needed ever. It may be in relation to older equipment....but I had a to have an internal non-preggo one and still didn't need the water. I'd ask a few questions before. Drinking that kind of water and holding an overly full bladder can actually damage the bladder, which can be bad, to say the least. Hope it's nothing serious...

Same for me...my Dr. wanted a full bladder for the external and an empty bladder for the internal.

OP, maybe they are preparing you for both.

I've had two ultrasounds that were pregnancy related and one that wasn't. All three required me to drink 32 oz of something (didn't define water specifically) within 2 hours of the appointment. All three ultrasounds were at different offices, one having very up-to-date equipment. I wonder if they ask or don't ask depending on their training?

Yep. The 32 oz of water is right. I was able to use the restroom afterward but received my first speeding ticket in my life on the way home from that ultrasound because I really needed to go again;) There was no way I was going to explain that to the cop so I just prayed that he wrote very quickly:lmao:

I've had several internal u/s to measure follicle size while I was going through a ton of infertility treatments last year. I was never told to have a full bladder. In fact, every time I went into the u/s room, they had me empty my bladder before putting the gown on.

I had one of these about 2 years ago. And yes, I had to do it with a full bladder. No fun at all when you take diuretics--but I did manage. I figured out when I had to start drinking the water to get it all down, and estimated how long I could hold it all. I am sure you will be able to do so too. They had a bathroom next to the exam room, and you can believe I made a beeline to it immediately afterwards!

I've had an internal and extra twice and they said I didn't have to drink water and told me it was OK to go to the restroom before. I have a fibroid in my uterus that causes spotting between periods.
