I had my ears pierced when I was about 8 years old. When I was in college, I started developing allergies that I had never had as a child/teen. I became allergic to animal hair, penicillin, and even developed seasonal allergies. I don't understand why......but it all hit me my sophomore year of college. At that time, I also started getting infections while wearing earrings. I tried all kinds of earrings thinking it was due to cheap jewelry. I tried pure gold, hypoallerginic, sterling silver, etc. Honestly, I tried everything! Nothing helped. I kept painful, infected ears. I decided it was not worth the pain and let my earring holes close. I have been wearing clip ons all of these years. However, they, too, are painful after several hours. Plus, there is a limited selection of earrings. So I have been considering getting my ears pierced again. Do you think that I will still have bad allergic reactions after 20 years? Where do I get my ears pierced now? I am still undecided.

It could be that your ears were so sensitive and sore from whatever you were allergic that they reacted to anything put there. I have nickle allergies and for well over 40 years reacted to metal that touched my skin that had nickle, including snaps and earrings that were not 24 ct. For some reason I stopped reacting. I bought a couple pairs of "cheap" earrings the last time I was at WDW and have been fine with them and don't have any problem with snaps. So yes, you can react to them and then, over time, stop reacting.

That is what I was wondering. I will gladly pierce them again if I know that I can outgrow that allergy with time.
Your news/informatin is encouraging! Thanks!

My ears still get itchy after all these years. I had them pieced in my teens and had to stop wearing them due to my allergies. I got them repierced in my late 20s (20 years ago) and still have problems. I found that if I wash my gold earings often, the problem is minimized.

I got my ears pierced when I was 16. About age 30, I became sensitive to any material in my ears -- no matter how hypoallergenic it was.

My holes never closed and from time to time I'd try it again, and very quickly my ears started to itch and within 30 minutes, it was unbearable. I just gave up.

Hmmm......you know..........I have never even tried to put earrings in after all of these years. I just assumed that the holes had closed. I wonder if earrings would go in now????

So you can only wear the gold posts, right?

Do places pierce ears with gold posts?

Some places have piercing earrings made of titanium. Those shouldn't cause a reaction. I think you can also buy titanium earrings. They're just not as available and more expensive.

My DH has a nickel allergy. He wears a platinum wedding band and a titanium watch, and he's fine with those. Unless you wear 24kt gold or find gold jewelry that is specifically nickel-free, gold alloys have nickel in it. Silver is no good at all. White gold that's been rhodium plated is fine, but the plating will wear off, and there's more nickel in white gold than yellow. "Hypoallergenic" is a fake term; even that stuff has nickel in it. Earrings can irritate anyone's ears, but obviously a nickel allergy is worse. I would try some titanium jewelry and see if it irritates you (it's much cheaper than platinum).

I don't have any problems wearing my necklaces, rings, etc. I just had that problem with earrings.
Is that typical though?

Titanium is the *only* thing my daughter can wear. Her ears ran the entire time she tried any other metal and they never would heal. She repierced using Titanium and never had a problem. :thumbsup2

That is exactly what happened to mine. They ran constantly!

How long did she wait before she repierced them?

Where did she pierce them with titanium? Do you find that at most jewelry stores?
Sorry for asking so many questions. I just have not bought earrings in so long!
