I was on a NCL cruise last Nov. They had a three in one Asian restaurant. Part of it was where they cook in front of you, another part was a sushi bar and the other was asian fusion. We ate in the asian fusion part and liked it so much we went again a few days later. On our second visit we did not get the same waiter, but he saw us and came over and talked for a while. He then offer to get us some sushi on him, we appreciated the gesture but explained, we weren't really fans. So he told us he had just the thing for us & he was right! :lovestruc

Now I'm left trying to figure out if this is something I could find again or if this item was a direct result of the poor guy spending a year straight on a cruise ship doing the same job, in the same restaurant. Here's what he brought us, hopefully someone will have a name for it. :wizard:

It was two basic looking sushi rolls. The first one had rice, shrimp, cream cheese. The other had rice, crab, cream cheese and then one of them had cucumber and I think the other had avacdo. (i may be missing some minor ingredients) Then they deep fried each entire roll and then sliced them like normal sushi.

It was SOOOOOO good!! :lovestruc Please tell me this wasn't an original creation by our awesome waiter, 'cause if it was I may have to book another cruise just to have it again! :rolleyes1

Thanks. :)

Okay, well let's be clear. Those aren't traditional sushi rolls, so people can call them whatever they want.

It does sound like some California Roll derivatives. California Rolls are made with surimi (a cooked fish puree made from white-fleshed fish), with cucumber and avocado.

Sometimes, sushi makers replace the surimi with other things; crab, shrimp, even lobster. I don't think that necessarily makes them better; there is something traditional about eating sushi made from a product, like surimi, that is so uniquely Japanese.

So basically it seems like he took a california roll & deep fried it. Although, I don't think the fish part was a puree, because we could definitely tell one roll was shrimp & the other was crab. Basically though it's the same thing.

Thanks for that info and so fast! :)
