Question for Son's project

My son is working on his photography badge for Scouts and one of the questions is to explain the process by which the pictures are recorded. Any idea how this works for digital that he can explain.

is a common type of chip used in digital video cameras (the alternative would be something like a CMOS Sensor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_pixel_sensor)
