Would you utilize a website that helps you book a cruise with a roommate? Say like a travel agent that specializes in booking singles on cruises, and matches you up with a roommate? I know there are boards out there like CC that has a thread of people looking for a roommate, but that to me is scary. A lot of them are men looking for female roommates, gee, I wonder why? HMMMM. LOL

I'm thinking about ways I can get into travel planning as a part time gig, but looking for a niche.

I would never do that. I value my privacy, safety, and security far too much to share a room with someone I don't know.

I'm a solo cruiser, I'm booked on my first Disney cruise in September 2020. The short answer is no.

I travel a lot solo, Disneyland California , Disneyland Paris , and American and European city trips. I like being able to shut out the world when I close my hotel room door, I value my privacy and safety.

I have travelled and shared a room with friends in the past. Yes it is enjoyable, but sometimes there are many issues. Sharing a small room with a person you don't really know causes all sorts of complications
  • snoring
  • sleep hours
  • night owl / morning grump / early riser
  • the bed situation / how do you decide who gets the main bed and who gets the sofa bed
  • does the person who gets the sofa bed pay less than the person who gets the main bed
  • main dining / second dining, what happens if one person wants late dining and the other doesn't
  • bathroom situation , high maintenance person who takes ages in the bathroom
and thats not even getting into the the privacy and safety issues, or the language issues.

Sharing the room safe, what happens if money or valuables goes missing??

The only time I "roomed" with strangers was when I did a Contiki bus Tour around Europe, 12 days 7 countries. I was put in a room with 2 sisters. As it was a bus tour and we were staying in a different hotel most nights I didn't mind it. I was part of a group and got to know everyone.

I think most solo travellers are solo for a reason and many choose to travel solo. Especially on a cruise, you can choose how much or how little interaction you have with your fellow cruisemates.

Also I think many people who have never done solo travel think us solos are lonely and are missing out on sharing the experience with others. This is not the case, solo travel is good for the mind, body and soul. Solo travel is just as enjoyable, maybe even more so than being with others. You don't have to conform or compromise to fit in with the group. You are free to be you and do what you want to do.

I travel solo and as yet have never tried a specialist solo trip where you share for the very reasons already mentioned. Yes it can save you money but you can also end up with someone awful to share with and I'm fairly sure I could be the awful person too - up at 7am every morning must be someone's worse nightmare. I think there would be some solo travellers out there that would look at these type of things as there are already companies that do tours in this way but I just don't think this would be for me. Now if it was a company that specialises in sorting out group solo cruises where you don't share rooms but have the social side of these tours that might be more appealling.

100% no.

Even sharing a cabin with a friend was awkward. Definitely not doing it with someone I am just meeting for the first time on embarkation day.

I will happily pay the rate charged to solos for my privacy.

Never sailed solo but I've learned from a past experience: On our last trip, we decide to share a hotel room with my in-laws thinking "Meh... It's just for one night". We learned the hard way that they both snore like jackhammers (even very efficient earplugs wouldn't cover the noise).

You never know if the person is messy or not... Honest or not. You're gonna share the same "safe"?

Nah...

As previous posters said I would advise against this. I also think it wouldn't save you THAT much money - one room with two people is not half as cheap as one with with just one person.

It literally is half as cheap: DCL charges solo cruisers two full adult fares for a stateroom. But I would still never do it.

Never. Even when I travel with deAr friends I want my own space. Some cruise lines offer occasional rates where a single room is only 150% of the cabin price rather than 200%. And I was on a river cruise last year with my step daughter. I would never share a room with her because of her snoring but they offered one of our rooms with no single supplement. I would have paid full price for both if needed.

Well stated. Nice summation of how and why to be a solo traveler. "Free to be You". I like it!
