Question for Philadelphians

sure it's worth a road trip.....you and I will have lunch and I'll show you the Liberty Bell :teeth:

I'm not sure we have that much in common. Whatever would we find to talk about? :smokin:

Chink's on Torresdale Ave have great steaks, tasty & tender. For the cheesesteak lover, they only have American cheese, no sauce either.
And the name has caused some controversy but the owner & people
who work there are very nice & the steaks, umm, delicious.

Ahh, cheesesteaks. Nothing is more guaranteed to create fights and rifts among Philadelphians ;)

Papa, don't go dissing Pat's and Geno's- they are good. Yes, they serve a lot of tourists, but those long lines aren't just full of people coming fresh from the airport. Jim's is about the same. But one thing about Philly- just about every neighborhood has a small deli or pizza shop that makes awesome steaks!

You are so right! My corner store makes some cheesesteaks that I just crave....Some of the bigger names I think are overrated. It's basically just for tourism. And of course tourists don't go into any little neighborhoods they know nothing about, so everything is just Center City. I used to love Jim's when I used to work at the Gap on South Street, but that darn line was ridiculous, and those steaks aren't even worth it anymore. They taste like water.....I gave the one on the boulevard a chance (since that's closer to where I live), they tasted like water. So I just stopped trying. I'd rather just get one from the little corner store that just has the picture of the washed out cheesesteak on it......

But you know what? Pagano's has a REALLY good steak  .

When I lived in Vegas there was shop where they actually had the rolls shipped in from Philly (they had Tasty Kakes too).
Mmmmm, Tastykakes! I used to work with the son of the TK CEO -- he used to go home on the weekends and come back with Tastykakes for me. Once he even brought me a pint of Rita's for me because I mentioned I was jonesing for it! :thumbsup2

They used to sell TK in Syracuse, but I can't find them now -- I miss my jelly krimpets!

OT: meloney, that is THE cutest kid I've ever seen!

Lots of good eats advice, so I have nothing to add except - have fun and welcome to Philly!! :)

I worked at the Tastykake Factory off of Hunting Park Ave for a summer. (College summer job). My DSF also worked there as an electrician on the maintenace team.

It was interesting at first but after a few weeks i never wanted to look at one again.... I worked on the cookie line that produced choco-chip bars, fudge bars, and oatmeal raisin bars. I also got to work the mini-donuts line for a week (while our dept was in shut-down for cleaning/painting).

I still hanker a Tasty-klair pie once in a while though. ;)
Sometimes they aren't as fresh by the time they hit the shelves down here though....

chopped-up crappy beef on a bun with cheez whiz on top. it's not worth planning a vacation to Philthydelphia over.

Chopped-up crappy beef, cheez wiz, barely cooked onions and a crusty roll transcend the mundane and become sublime when done correctly. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts ;)

Philly- it's a nice place to live but I wouldn't want to visit there :teeth:

Okay, Amity, so the Bucs beat the Eagles yesterday -- can't you stop the abuse at that?? LOL! :rotfl:

Speaking of the Eagles game - they kept talking about cheesesteaks but they showed it w/ Philadelphia cream cheese. Yuck no one puts that on a cheese steak. That bothered me all yesterday afternoon.

it was about the same color of Cheez Whiz in the replays... how many did he eat before the game? :)

Well, they are "ok" but stay away from cheese whiz! When in that area I prefer Oregon Steaks.....

And my all time favorites are Pudgie's in Blue Bell and Norristown, or Dallesandro's in Roxboro........

If they weren't so dang unhealthy, I could easily eat them once or twice a week. I probably eat one once a month.

I vote for Dallesando's - they are the best!

Pat's, Geno's and Jim's are not even closed to Dallesandro's

Now, see, I am not a fan of Dallesandro's- too greasy. I had a Mama's steak once (think they are in Bala?) and it was pretty good, but you can't go by just one steak- you need a random sampling over weeks or months ;)
