Question for people who don't allow shoes in the house

I think it's kind of strange to ask people to take their shoes off when they come into your home. I don't know anyone that does this. I have hardwoods - I could almost understand the reasoning behind carpet - light colored but hardwoods? No I don't get that.

2 different things- mud season, and road salt. Neither of these are very good for wood floors.... with carpet, the dirt at least goes INTO The carpet, with hardwood it sits right on the floor

In the winter we track in snow, salt, sand, etc. In the summer we're tracking in grass, mud, dirt, pollen, and leftover road salt

We have new hardwood floors. I could perfectly understand taking my shoes or boots off in the winter as not to track snow and slush over the floors, that's common sense, but I see no reason for shoe removal in the warm weather at all. People that are entering my house are coming up my driveway and up my sidewalk. There's a rug inside the door to wipe your feet on, that's good enough for me.
When we go to my MIL's house, she always wants everyone to take off their shoes (new carpeting) so we do. I always take my slippers with me (in the winter) because she keeps her house cold, her floors are cold and my feet freeze!!
I think if you want people to take their shoes off, it should at least be comfortable for them!!!

I prefer people to not wear shoes in my house. Basically its due to the 1600 sq feet of hard wood floors.
Yup, we just had 600 sq feet installed -- and want to keep them looking nice.

Repair men, all who have come here, have had booties they put on their shoes when they enter the house, thats common around here.
I'd suggest that any service worker not automatically doing so are probably not worth the money having in to do repair work. It costs so little for them to provide this additional level of service, that those who don't are suspect in my book.

If someone comes in and says "do you want me to take my shoes off" I answer with a "thats totally up to you"
While I wouldn't tell someone to do so, I would surely respond more directly to an inquiry about taking shoes off from them. I think my response would be, "Please."

I had a party saturday night, and had close to 40 people here in my house without shoes.
Thankfully/unfortunately (?) we don't entertain much. I think friends would naturally take their shoes of; neighbors perhaps not, and for as infrequently as that would happen, it's only a moderate concern.

I don't know anyone that does this. I have hardwoods - I could almost understand the reasoning behind carpet - light colored but hardwoods? No I don't get that.
I never worried about it with carpeting. I only would consider it with wood flooring.

We would never ask anyone to take off their shoes, if they want to - that's fine (as long as they don't have stinky feet! LOL!) Our shoes come off 5 seconds after we enter for comfort's sake.

OTOH, a coworker had a party a couple years back and apparently did not want anyone wearing shoes in her house. But, she neglected to tell people this. So, a few minutes after a new person would arrive, you would hear her screeching like a banshee to 'take your shoes off - you should know better'. :confused3 I know she was from grew up in another part of the country, so maybe it is a regional thing.

Perhaps, if we were to have a dinner party, it should be themed Japanese, just as a cover for encouraging all folks to remove their shoes. :teeth:

Even though nobody in our family wears their shoes past the foyer, I would never asks guests to remove theirs. You might be sorry if you asked. :teeth:
