How often in the life of your DVC have the points allotments changed season to season?

I am asking, because I want to plan a HUGE family trip in 2007. I know, it seems way off, but I have a very large family, and I have 470 points a year. All of my 2005 points are used, so I would have to bank 2006 into 2007, and then I would have 940 points and the 470 points from 2008 if I need to borrow.

I am asking about the points allotment, because I just want to know what kind of points I will be needing, based on how many family members want to come. I just went to the dates I am considering and used 2005. I am hoping the points stay pretty close, year to year. The points have not changed much since I became a member in 2001, but I don't no if that is just a fluke or not. BTW, I am looking at the end of June/first of July so there is a pretty good chance those dates will still be in the Magic season in 2007.

To the best of my knowledge there have only been two occasions when the points were reallocated -

- the first was at OKW very early on. I don't know the details, but I do recall that the changes were fairly minor. Some days got a little more expensive and others a little less.

- the second was when DVC decided to make the standard view category at BWV. They did this before the resort was sold out and so I do not believe the preferred view points structure was modified at all - DVC just adjusted the total number of points to be sold.

IMHO, you have nothing to worry about. You can just use this year's chart (or 2005 will work, too) with some adjustments. If you are thinking of June/July, the only thing to worry about is how many Friday/Saturday nights vs weekday nights you will have.

Best wishes -

Oh yeah! Something I didn't think of, thanks, the Friday/Saturday dates would be different. Thanks for the reminder!

I have been a member since 95 and as carol said they have not change much. A few pts here or there. Nothing major.

You are corrent, this has always been and will most likely stay in Magic Season. The only dates that change from year to year are for Easter and Thankgiving.

Have a great trip, we did a 6 unit family trip in '99 for 32 people, had a blast.

While there has really only been two changes (reallocation when it was only OKW and BWV standard view added) you should consider your situation carefully. Don't try to cut it too close, especially if you're looking at a studio, 5 days avoiding weekends or off season. Usually I'd buy at least a 10% cushion unless you're buying enough points for a 2 BR for a full week the time of year you're looking to go. Only you can decide what's best for your family though.

if you have a shortage - you can always rent (this one time) from another DVC member.

the only time I would be concerned about is Oct and Nov - WDW resorts have changed these from value to regular for 2005.

so these could increase.

but can you imagnation the outcry with 90,000 members - I would think DVC would get lots and lots of complaints....

WDW does not like complaints!

so don't be surprise in 2007 if Oct and Nov are in Dream season instead of Choice.

I don't think they would be in Magic.

If they do change the season, they MUST also lower the points in another season to offset this. There is also a max allowable change of 10% unless approved by the members. And that will not happen.

I don't recall any restriction on the amount of adjustment. The only restriction is that the overall must even out. The change previously for OKW was in excess of 10% for adventure season.

Dean,
I went back to the original paper work from ‘92 and you are correct the limit is 20%. Somewhere before the '96 points came out the limit just disappeared. The NEW points came effective at OKW in '96 along with the opening of BWV and the 2 different points for standard and preferred views. I can't find any reference to the limit since the early years. Just one more change they slipped in over the years. I miss the original loose leaf binders Members Guide Book, when they made a change you got an update page so you knew when something was changed, now they just send a new book that has much less info, and it is difficult to tell when something was changed.

FYI, this limt is listed on page 162 of the original public offering statement. Even those have changed. My 1st was 240 pages my last is 73 pages. That was from when we only had what is now OKW, the last was from '03.

I do have the 93 version and it is indeed there, but that way from before I was a member. I normally look at the latest version and new I hadn't read it there. But a 20% limit doesn't give much in terms of restrictions for DVC.
