Question for Ohana Lovers

I have a question for you 'Ohana lovers.

I was able to get a dinner reservation a few minutes ago for our trip in
may (2nd to 10th).

there are 5 of us and the kids are all 10 and over so the price is 28.99 a person.

I am now wondering if maybe for that price I should have just gone with Chef Mickeys instead?

My kids are NOT adventurous when it comes to food. Soooo.. I ask....
What is the food at Ohana's like?

Is it more like a barbecue? Or is the food smoked? or does it have a hawaiian taste like the food at the spirit of aloha? Are there any other places out there (chain restaurants) that offer a similar flavor?

I know they like chef mickeys and I wanted to do something fun for this meal. I have heard good things about 'Ohanas but wonder if I can get them to eat there or if it will be a waste of money? Hmm.

Please any details will be great. (food type, dry or greasy, desserts, etc)

THANK YOU!!!

as you probably know the meats are on skewers, so its not really that wild. The dessert was different but good. I can't remember the veggie's. I guess I'm saying that you could simplify the meal but Chef Mickey is more traditional fare. Sorry not more help...overall loved the meal there...

The kids can get nuggets and fries if they aren't interested in the traditional O'hana Feast. I absolutely love it, but there are other options for kiddos...

Other than that -- the food on the skewers are actually fairly mild in flavor -- just sort of a smoked/grilled type of thing. The honey coriander chicken wings are a tad spicy, but I'm a 'hot weenie' -- I can't quit eating them...

The salad is great - mild... The noodles - kind of an oriental taste -- not unlike lo mein...

On the skewers are turkey, shrimp, steak...and pork. They can try any or all of those -- their choice... It's just pieces of meat - no breading or anything...

There are dipping sauces they can try -- personally, I like to drown everything in the peanut sauce, but that's just me, lol...

Do you think the food is similar to that at "the spirit of aloha" dinner?

We looove Ohana's and I personally felt that the food at Ohana's was 100 times better than the Spirit of Aloha. We will not be returning to see that again but Ohana's is a must do for us, my teenage boys especially love it but even my young daughters ask to go back over and over! They really enjoy it there!

Ohana's is great. I think the food is pretty "normal."

Thanks for the feedback, but what I am really looking for is:

What does the food taste like? Is it similar to what they serve at "the spirit of aloha meal" (we've eaten there) or is it more like a back yard barbecue taste ,
Or is it more like a smokey taste, etc..

Do the dishes taste more asian, or more hawiian etc..

Is the food similar to the food in any chain type restaurants (in flavor)

thanks gang

To me, the food is Polynesian inspired. With a hint of asian flavoring. Most of the flavorings are on the sweet side, but not overbearing. Nothing really hot that comes to mind. Our kids have always enjoyed Ohana, and it has become a must do every trip. I say go, and be surprised that your kids will enjoy.

When we first ate there in 2007, my then 6 year old was still pretty picky. We got some mac & cheese & chicken nuggets for him, but he still ate a lot from the adult portions. The shrimp were still served as appetizers then. I peeled a shrimp for him and encouraged him to "just try it." Before I could peel a shrimp for myself, his was gone! He ate shrimp as fast as I could peel them that night! It was a favorite restaurant for all of us (including DD who was then 9) I didn't find any of the food to be spicy, just a little sweet and very flavorful.

We have been to both and the food is sooo much better at Ohana

My family absoultley loves O'Hana! The potatoes they serve are the best. :thumbsup2 My kids 11 and 9 loved it as well. Plus the kids had fun getting up to do the hula lessons.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a quick question about Ohana. I'll be traveling solo for my May trip and just want to make sure that I'll still enjoy it as a solo diner. I'm not concerned about kids and noise since that's part of what going to WDW entails and I figure I'll have enough quiet dinners at other restaurants if I need to get away from it all.

I guess what I'm really asking is if they'll still bring one person the assorted meats listed on the menu.

I loooooove Ohana!! It is one of the only restaurants that everyone I've taken there has loved. Everyone requests a return visit for each trip!!

Haven't done the "spirit of aloha" so I can't compare it. Personally I don't think it tastes like a back yard BBQ but the meat is cooked over a flame so it sort of does have the "grilled" taste but it's not smoky. Agree with what another poster said, most of the food has a hint of sweet. The shrimp can be a little spicey but to me the rest of the food is mild.

I can't think of any chain that it would remind me of, it's sort of unique.

I was very skeptical about Ohana because my family has very simple tastes. We are more along the line of Applebees, Texas Roadhouse, etc. However, I took everyone's advice and tried everything that came our way and I must say it was absolutely wonderful. It was by far the best meal we had at WDW and now is officially my very favorite restaurant. We liked Ohana way better than CM.
