This is for moms who have a daughter who has gotten her period... or just for anyone who knows. Assuming a girl (11 years old) is healthy, eats relatively right and gets some exersize each day... should she change vitamins once she gets her first period? She's taking regular kids vitamins, like she has since she was like 3. I figure it might be time for a change ;)
TIA

My girls 14, and 12 both take the One a Day teen formula. I have never really checked to see what if anything is different about them vs. the regular one a day, but I get them and they do actually take them, so not a big deal.

My girls also take One A Day Teen. They decided they were "too old" for the Flinstones ones - lol.

One a Day teen is what DD12 takes. At her middle school well kid physical, the dr. recommend she take a vitamin, took her to the store and that is the one she choose. Kind of surprised me, she doesn't like taking pills so I thought for sure she would pick a gummie...

Oh my goodness I had never even heard of One a Day Teen!!
Wow, I need to seriously get with it!
I will check that out this weekend.
Thanks!!

Me too. I have been giving dd the same animal shape vitamins that I give her younger brothers.

We were taking a vitamin for teens but my DD 16 stopped - made her sick. My DD 12 has taken them. Their doctor also recommended an Iron pill. We give them one every other day.

DD16 takes gummy vits and an iron pill every day. She eats a very well-balanced diet, but no meat so she has to guard against anemia. The iron takes care of that. She's the healthiest one of the bunch.:goodvibes

My preteen takes One A Day teen formua too! Seemed like the best choice for her. Unfortunately, they don't seem to do much for tween mood swings!

My DD (will be 13 in August) takes the One A Day VitaCrave Gummies. I bought the One A Day Teen vitamins but she still has a hard time swallowing pills and is afraid to take them.

I am assuming that everyone knows this, but just wanted to mention that the biggest thing is probably the iron. Women/Girls who have a regular period may need more iron than children or men.

Yea, I am going to read the One a day teen bottle and check the iron content. I dont want to give her an adult iron pill w/o checking with doc, and am not anxious to take her to doc just yet. I hope it proves to have good iron content. Sounds like it will, a lot of moms here use it! :thumbsup2

Thanks agian everyone.

Iron can become very toxic quickly so I wouldn't mess with that, same goes for all the fat soluble nutrients. Just because her body is behaving in an adult way hormonally doesn't mean the rest of her is on the same page, especially with regard to weight. Her body is made to regulate her Iron level during that time, just like all other females. If she has started to menstruate I would leave it alone and let her own body do the elegant mechanisms it is designed to do to keep her in balance. I tend to think our bodies are pretty amazing all by themselves.

If you would feel better maybe increase her intake slightly through her diet during that time. Throw some spinach into her salad or coax her to eat a bowl of Total, but more than that may be too much... at least that's my 2 cents.

Heck, my OB doc told me to just take kids vitamins, even now they have enough iron in them. I like the taste too lol

Can I ask without being jumped on .... ??? Why do all your kids take vitamins ? If they eat right or even reasonably well then they should be getting enough vitamins from their food right ? I have never taken vitamins or given them to my kids (even when I was BFing they got nothing extra). My DR agrees that they don't need them, so why do all your kids take them ? Are their diets deficient in something ?

My family eats the same type of meals that I ate growing up and are hardly ever sick and if they are it doesn't last long. Basically it's a meat and potatoes dinners type thing.

With dd having mono over the last few months, the doctor has done a couple of blood tests. She has started her period but with the illness she has only had it twice actually; November and March. She is not anemic but something with her red blood cells showed him that she needs iron. So she takes a slow release Iron pill every day and a one a day multi vitamin.

As for the question about why take a vitamin if they eat a balanced diet: Our doctors have always suggested it, so the kids have always taken vitamins.

Me again...

I agree with the concern about kids taking vitamins!

Honestly, with me, most vitamins would make me sick... everything from stomach-ache to migraines.
I think that they are full of synthetic vitamins and additives that really bother me.

The only reason that I mentioned the iron is that, even with a modestly healthy diet, it is hard for many women to get enough iron... Unless you are eating fresh red meat, and dark greens like Spinich, almost daily... it is easy to become iron deficient. I also do not think that most general vitamin supplements have enough iron to be toxic.

Here is what we take...
An all natural supplement that is full of many vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc... As I said, I am VERY sensitive, and I can take these with absolutely no problem...

LIFE Essence - The Master Multiple
by Pure Essence Labs.

I can very highly recommend these.

Just one a day seems to do the job with me.
I know that I am getting a lot of vitamins and B vitamins etc.. because just one turns my pee a darker/brighter yellow!

I don't order online, but I thought this might be a good link so you could see these. I notice that it is rated 5 stars by their customer reviews.
