Question for locals...Sunpass vse E-pass?

For all of you who live close to Orlando, I have some questions on toll roads.

We live east coast (Melbourne) and frequently travel to Orlando. Occasionally we head to Tampa to Busch Gardens. Sometimes we take 192 and sometimes we shoot over on toll roads (528).

I just found out we may be moving to Tampa very soon as well.

I'd like to get one of the electronic devices to go through toll roads faster but I am unsure which to get. I can't tell what the difference between Sunpass and E-pass is. On their web sites, I can't seem to find a map that shows me which roads the are accepted on.

Plus, I have no idea if we would even use toll roads anymore if we live in Tampa. (I.e. going from Tampa to Orlando)

Any advice?

It does not matter which you get. Any type of toll road pass issued by any toll authority within the state is valid on all toll roads within the state.

I originally bought my pass when I lived in Orange County, so I got an E-Pass. I now live on Polk County (and have for 6½ years) and still have the same E-Pass. I can use it in Polk and also in Tampa, as well as anything for the Turnpike Authority or anywhere else.

The toll roads don't care which one you use as long as there is sufficient money in your account.

And I have mine set up so when I get under $10 balance it automatically adds $40 from a credit card to my account.

We have a sunpass. Works fine throughout the state.

We still have it now even though we aren't in Florida. I forgot it last time--so we took 192 when we were in town.

Isn't the net cost of the pass only $5 or something?

In any case--not sure if you need tolls to head down to the Keys or if you would need for the Cross town expressway in Tampa...

So you may not need it then. But it is to handy have.

From what I understand you can use either. We have one for both vehicles but we live in Orlando close to the toll roads for us its faster to get on and pay for the drive then try and snake around on back roads.

I'd get one and put the bare minimum on there for emergencies if you end up not needing it in Tampa and if you do then put what you think you will use. the money doesn't expire to my knowledge so if you don't use it, you won't lose the money but will have it if you go on a trip to Orlando and need it while here.

We recently moved to FL and bought the Sunpass as we were told it also encompasses all the Epass tolls. It can also be used to pay for parking at MCO. We bought the "sticker" version at Publix, activated it online and stuck it on the windshield. Went to Orlando last week and flew thru those pesky toll booths. No more scrounging for change.

On a side note, before we got the Sunpass, DH tried to buy a roll of quarters at several local banks and was turned down as we didn't have accounts there. We had never heard of such a thing!

I don't think it matters. We have a Sunpass Mini (the sticker), and it is $5 and comes with a $5 credit on your acccount. The Sunpass box (that you can move around into different vehicles) is more, $25 I think, and I don't know if it comes with the same $5 credit. We had the box but the battery died, so rather than mess with the battery, we got stickers.

We have the Sunpass as it was easy to get. Just picked one up at our Publix store.

the only reason it would matter is discount, if you travelled 408 every day I'd recommend you get an epass since they give a frequent toll discount.
