Question for ladies...

I am having my tubes tied next Wednesday, and was wondering what to expect afterwards. Is there a lot of pain? I am 38, in good health and I exercise regularly. How long until I can expect to be able to walk for exercise again? I plan to go back to work on the following Tuesday, I am a secretary and it requires no lifting or strenuous activity. (Because of Dh's job, he would not being able to be on light duty so he cannot have a vasectomy. We are 1000% sure we are done with kids, and this seems to be our best option. )

Are they going through your belly? If so,request pain meds just in case. The gas that is used to expand the stomach lodged in my shoulder-it was very painful. It was more painful than my C sections or my hysterectomy.

I had it done with my c/s.

I had a c/s on a Thursday just before noon & I was up & walking that night, by the next day I was almost speed walking the baseball diamond (that is what they call the floor set up at Yale in CT). And I left the hospital Saturday afternoon & I would of left in the am if the OB came earlier.

So I guess I had no pain with it.

One of my OB's told me I could deliver the "v" way (not sure if I can say that word here) & then have a tubal after & they'd just make a few little holes & that was it but I wanted a c/s & it done then.

A few of my friends told me that AF was heavier after their tubal & a bit whacko (aka off scheduale), granted I am still nursing so it still can be off but I can tell you the 3 I have gotten have been VERY heavy so prepair for the worst & I mean I fill up a plug or pad in an hour on day 2 & 3 (TMI).

I had mine with a c-section too. I had no trouble after having mine. I was up and taking care of three little kids within two days and I was very overweight and out of shape. You should always request meds as a just in case.... the stuff that doesn't seem like it should case pain is usually the stuff that hurts the worst ... good luck on the op.

I had my tubes tied 13 years ago, when I was 27. (laproscopic) I have to say, I thought I would feel better sooner than I did.

I cannot say it was excruciating, just that most people said it was a 'piece of cake', so I think my expectations were unrealistic...it's still surgery.

I had the previously mentioned shoulder pain and I cannot tell you why, but sharp pains in the female parts for the first 2 days. And my abdomen was sore and crampy.

The pain meds helped me alot. It was weird because I felt more crummy 4 days after than 1 day after. I felt back to my complete self between 1-2 weeks afterwards.

Not a horrible thing, but more discomfort than I had planned on.

Not sure if that helps, LOL. I would do it again in a heartbeat, FWIW.

I had my tubes tied when I had my third child by C-section. Before I did this, I had a long talk with my female physician. She was very knowledgeable and was able to clear some things up for me. I had heard that sometimes women have heavy cycles or cramping because of this. She told me why these things were not due to having the tubes tied. She explained why the cycles and cramping have nothing to do with having your tubes tied.

I don't have any experience on just going in and having it done though.

I also had mine done with a c-section birth of my 3rd. I have to tell you, I had a tremendous amount of pain. I figured it was a combination of the c-section and the tubal at the same time. Whatever you do, overestimate how much you think you'll need the pain meds. Don't go home without something, because getting them after the fact could be like pulling teeth.

Okay, thanks. I am having it done laproscopically (sp?) and am on the pill now, so the dr. said my periods might change after that. I have no problem with that, just glad I won't have to think about pregnancy any more! I am still about 35lbs overweight, but have lost 77 so figure this is a good time, especially since the colder weather will keep us in more, and the holidays are over now. Any other experiences? BTW, I have 2 kids ~ DS is 13 and DD is 11.

FWIW where I work is strenuous and if the guy had a vasectomy on Friday he would be back at work on Monday no problem...we even had one that had it done on his lunchbreak and came back to work (of course we did the rest of his work for him but he was still back there at work on the clock.) You really don't need to be on light duty after a vasectomy, it is NOTHING like getting your tubes tied!

Ditto. I was on the pain meds longer than I expected (about 10 days, but at around the 7 day mark I was just using one a day, usually at night.). Take it easy - everyone's experience with pain is different. I have heard that getting it done laparscopically reduces the pain. Good luck!

I had the shoulder pain too--it's due to the gas, the doctors said. They did warn me that there might be a bit of pain. HA. It was worse than recovering from childbirth. Not to mention, the hospital I had it done in put me completely under so I had the irritated throat due to the tube to go with it. Do not be afraid to take painkillers if you need them!

Other than the shoulder though I've had no problems at all, but it's taken me almost 6 years to quit worrying about it failing!

For most men this is true, however my DH has some physical anomalies, and would need to go to the hospital, have general anesthesia and then the doctor (military and civilian, he had consults with both) stressed that because of his type of job he must be on light duty for 2 weeks.

god, you are so lucky, after my second, I was 29, my OB said she personally doesn;t do them on anyone under 35. I wish, wish, wish I had found someone to do it while I was still in the hospital because I'm so busy now that I hate to think of 2 weeks of not feeling like myself. urggghh, it would have been good to be recovering when my mom was there helping me with the kids.

I had mine done a few months ago. It did hurt longer than I expected. I was completely under and went home a few hours later.
There are no scars. They went through my belly button and inside so I just had a bandaid.
Getting up from my couch and bed hurt, so I spent a lot of my time in a rocking chair.
I went back to work after 2 weeks.

Had mine done when I was 38. I agree with PAW, it wasn't excruciating but hurt way more than I thought. Through the belly button so no scars, alot of brusing, soreness and cramping. I had it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday

god, you are so lucky, after my second, I was 29, my OB said she personally doesn;t do them on anyone under 35. I wish, wish, wish I had found someone to do it while I was still in the hospital because I'm so busy now that I hate to think of 2 weeks of not feeling like myself. urggghh, it would have been good to be recovering when my mom was there helping me with the kids.

LOL, my doctor was progressive.

But, he didn't allow me to do it while in the hospital I had to wait until my youngest DD was 2 months old. At the time, I didn't think anything of it. But, looking back I think he wanted to make sure I was absolutely sure and wasn't just a pregnancy hormone whim. We had talked about it at every single visit during my pregnancy. (I had three children and was WAY sure)

It is really nice not having to worry about an unintended pregnancy.

I had mine done about 8 years ago. I didn't think it was bad at all. (Went thru my belly button) 3 days later I went away for the weekend and was out on the lake bouncing around in speedboat!

I do remember making the mistake of stopping to eat on the way home from the hospital with DH. I Should have known better than to eat after General Anestetia.(sp?)

A women in my aerobics class had her tubes "cut and burnt" supposedly after the birth of her son. (she had two older teens already so the third was kinda a whoops)

Anyway fast forward to when i knew her 4 yrs after the fact. She was 41. She started getting really sick and thought she had the flu. After a month or so she went to her dr were low and behold....She was pregnant...

She had an uneventful pregnancy and i met her "wonder" baby when she was around 6 months old. So cute.

These things can happen...but usually don't.

My niece had her tubes tied last year a few months after turning 30. She had a very hard pregnancy with her daughter...airlifted to hospital 150 miles away, bedrest, etc. and had been told she may never get pregnant before that, so she, her husband and the doctor decided tubal was a viable option. She had it lapriscopically done and I have to say she was kinda nuts IMO, but she said she had no pain to speak of afterward and that night she went to see Larry the Cable Guy perform locally. (Slap head here if you ask me) It was her husband's birthday and the tickets were a gift for him. I told her I thought she was crazy for going the same day, but she said she did just fine.
