Question for Insulin dependent diabetics

Now that you cannot carry cold/ice packs on the planes, does anyone have a suggestion for keeping insulin cool. My sister wants to bring along an extra bottle of insulin for my nephew, who is diabetic, and is concerned about keeping the insulin cool.

I just came back from Florida using Spirit Air and I asked about this because we took my husband's insulin without the cold pack. TSA told me it would be fine because it is used with the insulin to keep it cold.

Seriously, check with your pharmacy most insulin does not need to be kept cold.

Check the instructions but most insulin can go a month without being refrigerated this refers to room temperature not out in the hot Florida Sun.

Were there any problems getting the insulin and syringes through security? Any advice for doing so?

We had absolutey no problems getting through security with 12 bottles of medicine, insulin, needs and pump supplies. Everything must have a prescription lable on it.

agree with the other posters... check with your pharmacy or call manufacturer of insulin. Most insulins can be stored at room temp for 30 days.

Hmm. So all insulin vials must be preserved in their boxes, unopened, since they don't label the vials but the boxes?

Same thing for the syringes...they're not labeled, nor is the bag they come in, just the huge box the bags of syringes come in.

Could be a problem...

This makes no sense ... what bottles of insulin have a prescription label on them? I use a Novolog pen and Lantus ... no labels on any of it.

I'm just saving the cartons from my Byetta pen, and one carton from Lantus. I had no trouble Kansas City to Logan just after the rule changes. I did not have the (huge) bos for the syringes.

The insulin my nephew uses is good for a month (without refrigeration) once you start using it, but my sister is carrying an extra bottle with her (in case the other one breaks), so she wants to keep at least the extra one cool. If she doesn't use it in Fla., she only has a month to use it, and my nephew doesn't even use one vial in a month. There must be some sort of cold pack out there that is not made with a gel, or with liquid...I just can't seem to find one yet. Thanks for your replys.

http://www.friouk.biz/uk/ I purchased my Frio cooling "wallet" three years ago...It is activated by putting placing it in cold water..It says it keeps it cold for 45 hours...but, honestly...mine has stayed cool for a week without having to put it in cold water again.

I always use it to keep my insulin cool while traveling..and I intend to use to when I fly to Disney next month... :thumbsup2

We just returned from WDW on August 23rd and we had no trouble with our ice pacs. One security person took the pac out and looked at it but passed it thru. We took unopened vials that had to stay refrigerated as well as the vial we were using at the time. Just a word of warning.. if you are staying on property.. they turn the fridges to max so that it cools quicker when you arrive. We did not know this and it froze her insulin and we spent hours and lots of money getting new insulin. Our concierge said turning the fridge up was common. nice eh?
