Every time I mention that I am moving back to FL people gasp and tell me how bad the schools are. I grew up in FL and I don't feel any less intelligent then other people my age here in the great white north. So my question is...Are the schools really that "bad" and if they are what makes them so "bad"? Thanks!

I dont think that the school are bad. I believe as long as you as a parent put in as much effort as needed you kids will come out fine. People think these days they have no responsibility in teaching their kids and then blame schools and everyone else when their kids fail in life.

We are new to Fl. We just moved to Windermere and the kids are at both elementary and middle school level. My older kids are in the advanced math and don't feel the work is any easier than in Pa(where we came from). They have already learned some of the material they are doing now though. My elementary kids on the other hand are doing much more advanced work here than they did in Pa. It doesn't seem to be harder or easier, pretty much right on track.

My husband and I heard all the same things as you, and I know there are some counties and schools that are not great, but I think what happens is that people get stuck in how things "used to be" and even when things change for the better, there is still a stigma. We chose our schools first and then looked for housing in the areas of those schools. It seemed to work for us and I am not concerned about my kids "getting dumb" as a lot of people from home had told us..lol. Good luck!!

I agree that parents should take part in their kids education.

Thanks for the reply, that makes me feel better.

I don't think the schools or teachers or programs are bad, I think a lot of the parents and students are bad. Education is what you make of it, not what it makes of you.

I think southern schools in general get a bad reputation but I was raised in FL and do not feel like I suffered educationally because of it. My kids are being raised in FL and I think that there are good and bad schools everywhere. Of course any child will suffer academically if their parent(s) don't take an active hand in their education.
