Anybody have a bikini wax prior to your cruise or use some kind of hair removal lotion for legs rather than shaving everyday on the cruise?

Any recommendations? I have never done either, but hey, this is time to try a few new things!

Also, I've heard that you can get red bumps following a bikini wax. What is good to prevent or help these?

Thanks everyone!

Barbara

Had a friend do that once...That was all I needed to see to know I NEVER wanted one myself! She had a horrible rash that looked worse than any razor could do! A good old razor and shaving cream is good for me, thanks!

I would try the hair remover or waxing a few months before your cruise to make sure you won't have a rash or alergic reaction. Then if it works out do it again before you cruise. I had my lip waxed at a salon a few years ago and had a severe rash for a week.

I use Nair. Waxing gives me ingrown hairs, which look like zits. So not attractive in a bathing suit. I wouldn't say that Nair does a fabulous job, but it doesn't itch like the shaving grow out can. I'd love to have the lazer removal, it's just waaaaay to expensive.

Judging from my drugstore trip yesterday, this thread might interest the guys. New "Nair for Men" is on the shelves. It claims to remove arm, chest and BACK hair. DH has no idea what he has in store before our next trip. ;)

I had a wax before our first cruise. Nair is really irritating to me. I used a high quality spa, and they did a nice job. I was pleased with it.

I also had my eyelashes dyed (since I'm blonde, they disappear without mascara, and I wasn't going to do makeup when I was just hanging around the pool all day!). The dye doesn't thicken them, but at least you could tell I had eyelashes and I didn't look like an albino rat!

get the bikini wax! just get it from a nice place--you will not be sorry. no shaving, no bumbs--it is great! since it lasts for at least 3 weeks maybe get it a week to 10 days before you sail .

First find a reputable place. Each person reacts differently. I've been doing the waxing thing for 10+ years and still get the bumps!

Second, if you have not had it done before get it done for the first time at least 3 months prior then again no later than one week before the cruise. You will not regret it! You will not have to worry about it while on the cruise. Plus the hair grows in much softer and less irritating.

I usually get defuzzed prior ~ Eyebrows (threading), Underarms, legs and bikini area! It's great not to worry about for a while!

bikini wax for me .... and i agree with those that said to find a reputable salon ... after waxing (or really after any hair removal) be sure you loofah the area when you shower, this will help prevent in-grown hairs. I recently bought "TenSkin" which is supposed to help prevent bumps and redness after any hair removal (shaving, waxes, Nair, etc.); it seems to be working pretty well.

(and once you've had the regular bikini wax a few times and feel really adventurous you could go for a brazilain bikini wax :o )

I would second the motion to try it out well in advance of your cruise first. I found out the hard way I am allergic to the cream they put on afterward--benzycane or something like that. Gave me a nice red rash for a few days.

Bikini waxing is not for the extremely modest, is it? It's not the pain that would get to me, (I have my eyebrows done a lot!) but, isn't the procedure a little, uh, embarrassing?

I need to get over this, right? I mean, they do dozens of waxes, don't they?

I think the Gigi brand of hair removal works well and is not too irritating. It can be bought it beauty supply stores. Whatever you do, DON'T try something new for the first time right before the cruise. Try it for a few weeks ahead of time in case there is a reaction or redness.

Anyone else crossing their legs and squirming??

I get my eyebrows done and there is no way in heck I could do that down there..... OUCH! Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes!

This is a hard thing for the modest and it does hurt. They do give you a pair of paper underwear, but they don't cover much. The technician will have to touch and look. I worked at the Elizabeth Arden Spa for years and the technicians waxed people all day, so it's truly no big deal for them. They just see it as hair to remove. I have very fine hair that tends to break in the process, instead of the root coming out, so I always get lots of bumps. Give it a try, but don't do your first right before the cruise.

A word of advice for those going to do the waxing of legs or anyplace else.....get it done a few days before you go. My friend who sailed with me had it done 2 days before the cruise. Well the day before the cruise she has what looks like hives all over her legs. Turns out it was a bunch of infections where they removed the hair. She has had it done at the same place for a while now and this was the first time it happended! She ended up on antibiotics and her legs were a mess for the first few days of the cruise!

I bought a wax machine at a beauty supply store and do my own bikini area. It takes some practice but it solves the modesty problem and the fact that the nearest salon that does body waxing is 60 miles away.

I do agree with the fact that you need to try it ahead of time. I did when I first started and still do have redness that lasts a day or two after. Before our last cruise I also had my underarms waxed and the was wonderful. I hate shaving under my arms as muchas I hate shaving my bikini area so I will definately do it again!

Oh, and it does hurt but only for a few seconds. Its definately worth the 3 weeks of not shaving.

What a discussion! I've never been waxed, but I have thought about it.

Do you really have to have 3 weeks of no shaving everywhere?

The idea of waxing the underarms sounds like a great idea.

The Brazilian wax hurts, Hurts, HURTS!
And, while I've heard most men love it, my husband thought it looked as if I had just undergone chemo treatments
I do get regular bikini waxes, lower legs and arms. Not underarms, they're too easy to do on my own.
Try the lower arm. I thought that sounded strange at first, but it's so nice to have smooth arms, especially with a tan.

I've always found Turtle wax great on the Honda.
Really shines in the sun and adds to the value of the car...

Oh sorry wrong wax... Think I'll leave now

Cheers,
Grumbo

Mom2Belle&PeterPan, just an FYI, the best way to get guys to read a thread is to put "for females only" in the title!:teeth:

Will someone please just start making more modest bathing suits? When I was younger (much younger) shaving "down there" was unheard of. At least I never heard of it. I can't imagine putting a razor or wax down there. I suppose now everyone will be looking for the old lady on the cruise with hair showing. I'll be the one with a pair of shorts over my bathing suit.

Can't believe that I just typed this and am about to hit reply.
