Question for Ebay Sellers using UPS

I have a question that the reps at UPS don't seem to understand.

I just finished an Ebay auction, final selling price $200. For UPS insurance purposes, is the declared value $200? Would a print out of my Ebay auction serve as the receipt?

I want to use UPS because some of their stores have a "Pack and Ship Promise." If they pack it and they ship it, they are completely responsible for reimbursement if any damage occurs. My buyer tells me that UPS will use "Insufficient packaging" to get out of paying a claim if you pack it yourself.

Thank you for any input.

If you want to be reimbursed for the full $200 if the shipment is lost or damaged then yes, you have to claim the full value of $200. I'm not sure about the receipt ? but I would imagine that yes, your eBay receipt would work to prove the value.

Keep in mind that you'll pay a huge surcharge (on top of standard UPS rates) to have the UPS store pack something up for you and ship it. Huge. It might still be worth it to you, depending on the item, but I'd get an estimate before you go that route.

I'm a former UPS rep(15+years). Years ago the reps were involved with the claims and then the company started using a third party a few years ago.

In most cases UPS will pay you only what the item cost you not what you sold it for. So if the $200 item that you sold only cost you $10 ...$10 is what they will pay.

There is a way around it by saying that you lost that $200 sale a since you do not have another one to replace the one that was lost or damaged. You have to sometimes really push for them to give in. In that case you would need the ebay receipt showing the sale price.

The type of packaging and method of packing you use will determine if a claim is denied or not. If you do get denied , again, push back and dispute their findings. Take picktures of the item packed before you close the box. Good packaging with pictures kills their argument.

I have used th epack n ship store for several items and have never had a problem. I was told that if they pack it the pack and ship store is responsible. Most of them are not owned by UPS. Also, in many cases, the packing did not cost all that much. If I had bought a box, bubble wrap and packing peanuts I would have spent almost as much as just letting them pack it for me. I always take mirrors or other large heavy breakable items to them for packing, where I live they do a great job.
