Question for Eastern Itin Vets

if i plan to book a rent car for st john, should i rent in st thomas and ferry over or ferry over on foot and rent on st john? i guess i just want to know if the non car ferries leave near the ship, or at red hook like the car ferries.

When we went to St. John's our ferry boat was docked at the pier, right in front of the Magic, so we only had to walk the length of the ship to get on and off. Sorry I know nothing about where the car ferries are. I never even saw one that I can remember.

I am not an expert on this subject, but I have seen people post about this. Hopefully someone will respond. Maybe try to search this thread.

From what I remember:

There is a Budget rental car place near Havensight.

Some car rental companies do not allow their cars to travel on a ferry.

St. John has jeep rental companies right near the dock in Cruz Bay. This is the route I would take. Travel to Red Hook by taxi, take the Red Hook ferry over, rent a jeep in Cruz Bay, return the Jeep in Cruz Bay, and take either the Red Hook or Downtown (CA) Ferry back to St.Thomas. Make sure you leave enough time to get back to the ship.

thanks for the info, that sounds like the plan, it would sure be cheaper for us to do that, than use the car ferry, i think it was $35 or $40 for thransport, plus i seem to remember that rental prices were a little cheaper at cruz bay.

We honeymooned on St. John in 1992, and we had the best time driving around the island in our jeep. Don't forget to drive on the left side of the road, and watch out for Mongoose and wild donkeys. Some of the roads were very steep, narrow and twisty. Stay safe.

Edited to add: we rented through Cool Breeze Jeep Rentals. They have a small booth about a block to the left from the dock.
