Question for DVC Experts on points - how to use em'

Hello,

I've read about points, how they work, use years, banking, borrowing, I've seen posts about renting and transfering but I have a question....

I'm so ready to buy a resale contract but I have to be careful with how much I spend - I'm limited on my budget for points, so I want to see what would happen with a contract where the following scenario takes place....

Scenario: Let's say my family wants to go on a vacation in 2010 to a DVC resort. Suddenly, hubby decides that he wants to bring his mother along. Not to be outdone, I decide to bring my mother along and make it a 3 generation trip. Now, just to keep the peace, and so I don't go nutty being with extended family for a 24/7 period in a small area, I suggest we get a 2 bedroom.

Now here's where it gets tricky for me.....If I didn't have 2009 points, but I had 2010 points and I could borrow 2011 points, how do I make up the few points I still need to get the reservation? And by a few, I mean very few...

Do you buy them from Disney? Do you pay cash? Do you ask on the boards for a point transfer? What if you don't get someone who wants to transfer? Must those transfer points have the same use year month? How the heck can I get that ressie if I am short a few points without having to buy another contract?

nope. you can buy an add-on contract from disney for points for the next 30+ years but not for one-time use.

Do you pay cash?

sure, you could use points for some nights and then (if available) add extra nights on cash and have MS link the reservations. (you cannot mix cash and points to book a single night.)

Do you ask on the boards for a point transfer?

you can if you can find an owner willing to transfer the pts. but you only get one transfer per UY so they can be tough to come by.

What if you don't get someone who wants to transfer?

cash nights from MS would be a better option in that case.

Must those transfer points have the same use year month?

nope. (you can also bank pts after you've received them if you need to book something in the next UY.) but it does have to be the right home resort if you are booking more than 7 months in advance.

Ummmm.....having just eaten the crazy pills and just done this very same thing, I have a suggestion. Ahem.....get two studios. Put your mothers in one and put yourselves in another! I know, I know, no one would agree to that! Sigh!!!!

Hi there!

That's a great idea but I think that we were looking to spend some time together in the evenings in the room...since we have an infant, we will probably have some early evenings where we'll just want to play cards with the baby nearby...so a 2 bedroom would be perfect.

I've done your suggestion before and it was wonderful....we were two sets of adults though...no kids.

I'm still having trouble with the two bedroom--are the mothers sharing the two bedroom (studio) room? If so maybe you should get a one bedroom and a separate (on a different floor) studio. More than anything, I still shutter thinking about the mothers sharing a room and who gets to hold the baby for how long and when. And if either stays in the living room, how do you decide which mother gets the privacy of the BR? Are you trying to ruin any friendship between the mothers? And how well do either of the mothers handle a crying baby during the night.

Are you guys thinking of quality time for the mothers or a built in babysitter for you? I know that's harsh but keeping the peace in both families is something to consider. So if you take one mother and not the other that's a consideration too.

If your concern is having enough room to play cards (4 people) and watch the child reasonably comfortably, 2 OKW studios would probably work for you. Those studios are a little larger, and the table can seat 4 people. Bring in the two chairs from the balcony/ patio. We've had dinners for 4 around those tables.

But then you'd be in the same room as the kid and lets be honest talking, playing games, etc, probably not the best for the kid trying to sleep.

Putting the kid in a seperate studio wouldn't be ideal either.

If I may intrude, and ask a question similar to the opening one?

Just how successful is the renting board? I see lots of threads with people wanting to borrow and rent, but nobody every posts a "everything turned out great!" post!

So, if I need only up to say, 10 points, just how likely am I to get the points I need? All I ever see are "sent you a PM", or "are the points still available?" or "they're still available", or the dreaded "bump!" posts.

Does anyone ever have a successful transaction??
