Question for Catholics:Baptism?

I don't necessarily believe child baptism is necessary, but if neither of you is practicing your religious beliefs then why would you bother to have your kids baptized. Not sure what the point is if you gonna baptize them and then choose not to expose them to actively practiced religion. I'm not saying this condescendingly, I just kinda confused.

I'm kind of with dadtoagirl here. Why does your DFi want his kids baptised anyway, does he think that baptism is ticket into heaven? It really isn't. The BEST thing you can do for your children is for you and your DFi to find a church you like and start attending, then give your children the "gift" of faith.

At our church you have to be a practicing Catholic. One of the Godparents has to be, as well. A letter from their parish is needed as proof. You have to attend weekly classes for months (they want the Godparents or Sponsors there, too).

I wonder if that would apply to my nephews Godfather...he's a Franciscan LOL!

In our diocese the other Godparent can be of any religion. It only one of the parents is Christian, then they require both Godparents to be Catholic. The rules must differ by diocese. So check with yours.

I only needed a letter when I was a confirmation sponsor. When my niece was baptized, it was in my family church and the church that I was married in, so they may have accepted that as proof.

It's very posible, I know the "rules" vary from church to church and diocese to diocese.

If you wish them to be baptized at birth--then you have to attend a baptism class...I think it was for multiple Sundays--but it has been a while, that I don't remember.


If you wait until they are older (like school age)--they would have to go through the children's catechumanate (sp?)--a kids version of RCIA....and it is the parents decision if it is just baptism, or if you want to go through the whole thing.....your child can even be confirmed.

I know a few people who weren't married in the church but the kids were baptized in the church.

However--I agree with some other posters..you need to evaluate why you are getting your child baptised Catholic if you have no interest (at least at this time) in going to a catholic church. Part of the baptism is the understanding that you intend to raise your children catholic.

The Catholic faith will recognize any baptism from any christian denomination--they don't baptize a 2nd time.

If just the Baptism is what is important (and being christian--as opposed to a specific denomination)--it is best to find a faith that fits your family. .

Rules regarding CCD differ by church or diocese too. I never had to go to CCD every week, our church did it once a month. My friend's church did 1 week over the summer, monthly, or weekly classes, you could choose which way you wanted to do it. You also don't really have to go every year depending on the parish. Another friend was confirmed but had only gone to CCD the years before Communion and then 2 years before Confirmation, but not the years in between.

For baptism, my husband and I didn't have to go to any classes for our daughter, and I only had to go to class for one of my godchildren. The class was after Mass one Saturday for about an hour. We watched a video and discussed it and that was it. We also didn't have to show proof of being Catholic, but di have to show proof of the godparents. The church our daughter was baptized in isn't our regular church anyway, we did it near my mom's house in another state, so we weren't even registered members of that parish.
