Question for annual pass holders?

I was wondering if we take 2 ten day trips, one this Sept and another late August next year it might be a good deal to get the annual pass. But I am wondering when is the expiration date determined, from the date you purchase the pass for one year, OR from the date you first use the pass for one year?

We purchased our APs last August over the phone, but didn't activate them until Sept. Our passes started the day we activated them in Sept.

If you purchase an AP voucher, it starts the first day you go into a park. If you purchase the AP at WDW, it starts that day now.
