We leave on our week long vacation in 12 days...well 11days 20 hours but who's counting :rotfl: my question is...

How much cash do you take on vacation with you? do you use traveler's checks at all? Or just go with the bare minimum and a Disney Visa??

TIA!

I put the room etc on credit card, get charging privileges on my room key, and bring $300-$500 for emergencies, or for ice cream stands that don't take room keys or credit cards..whichever comes first...

We spent about $400-500 cash for taxi's from resort to resort (faster for dining), tips, airport meals since we had to make two loooong stops flying in from Hawaii.

We also put major purchases on our cc. I estimate what we might need and bring only half of that. I leave the rest home so I can pay my cc bill when I get back. I have my visa and my debit card with me. Have not used travelers cheques in years.

Thank you, that was what I told dh...that we would probably just charge everything, so we dont need a lot of cash!

We use the charge-to-the-room feature for just about everything. We might bring $100 cash for the two of us. We usually bring water and snacks into the parks so we don't really use cash much.

We use the cc & room card for practically everything. Even on our F&W trip the booths were very slow using the cards, so we used cash. I had brought about $250 in cash & had about $150 left. I haven't bothered with traveler's checks in years.

We bring about $150 in cash, and charge everything else (the money to pay off the credit card is already in the bank before we leave for the trip). We also have our ATM cards just in case, but so far, we haven't had to do that.

With the charging convenience at the resorts we bring very little cash. I might bring $400.00 but its mostly for cab fare from Kissimmee Amtrak station and back, plus our grocery stop. All else goes on our room charge, we get an express check out and its all itemized, I usually bring about 150 bucks home with me.

Long ago, when everyone was using Traveler Cheques, we had a problem in Disney as I had signed all the checks and my wife wanted to go shopping to DTD and I didn't. I gave her a bunch of checks that I already signed and when she tried to use them in DTD they would not let her because of a male signature and a female trying to use them. That ended Travelers Cheques for us, too much of a pain. We arrive in Disney and wallet, ID and cash goes right in the safe other than a few bucks for what-not.

We also take about $300 cash for those quick little things. But this time was thinking about the pre-paid Visa cards-I think that they work like a gift card but are accepted everywhere like a Visa. Does anyone know ??

Travler checks work great we never had a problem using them. There are atm's all over as well. Carry just enough cash for a couple of days.

When you check in they give you a card to that's your room key. When you check in and give them a cc you can use your room key to charge things

we take cash and travelers checks more amount with TC's. just in case they get lost can be replaced. We use the TC on our room key like a cc they just put in the amount we give them each day we do keep some cash on us, for places that dont take room keys.we put cash and TC in room safe so we dont spend it all. It works for us. we dont want to have a CC bill. So cash all the way. We do have a CC but for emergency only.

sorry if this is a crazy question but what is room charge? or key charge?
One of the perks of staying at a Disney owned-and-operated resort is that you have charging privileges. You can put down a credit card, debit card, cash, travelers checks, even Disney Dollars at your resort's front desk when you check in, as the basis for charging future purchases to your room account.

For example, let's say you want to set up a room charge for $500. They run your credit or debit card just to make sure it's an active account, but no charge or hold will be placed on the account at that time. Your room key, which is credit-card sized and has a magnetic strip, will also double as your room charge card. ANY purchase you make at any of the theme parks, water parks, resorts, and the Disney-owned stores within Downtown Disney can be made simply by presenting that room card. The card will be swiped, and you will have to sign a charge receipt. You will also get a receipt.

There is no cumulative limit on room charges. When you reach your limit, you can just set up another one, it's that simple. Let's say you set up a $500 room charge. If your next purchase attempt puts you over the limit, that charge will be declined. At that point, you can simply call your resort and authorize another room charge to be started -- they are TOTALLY set up to do this by phone. They did this by design, to make it as easy as possible, especially nowadays when every self-respecting 4-year-old seems to have a cellphone.

When you reach your limit, THEN your credit card or debit card is automatically charged. And like I said, you can set up another charge and keep going.

As often as you like, you can go to your resort's front desk and get an up-to-the-minute printout of your account. If you see you are near your limit, you can decide to have them charge that amount to your credit/debit card at that time, and then set up a brand spankin' new room charge account so you won't be sidelined for a few minutes on the phone later that day or the next day to set up another room charge account.

WDW sets upper limits for room charges based upon level of resort -- $500 for Values, $1K for Moderates, $1.5K for Deluxes. Like I said, these are UPPER limits. You can request a smaller amount.

Your personal financial info is NOT on the room key. It just tells Disney to charge the purchase to your room account; your credit card number isn't encoded on the room key. The name of your financial institution isn't even on your room key. If you lose your key, no one has access to your financial information.

And like I said, you don;t even need a credit or debit card to do this -- cash, travelers checks and Disney Dollars work just fine.

This set up is SOOOO convenient. I think we had $200 in cash with us for a week there with our 2 kids. Between this set up and the availability of ATMs, there was no need to bring enough cash with us to last the whole week. Except for the airport and the ice cream place at DTD (which isn't Disney-owned), I think I spent less than $10 in cash the whole week.

If we stay onsite we put charging privileges on the room key and use that, otherwise less than $100 cash and the rest on a debit/credit card. I NEVER carry large amounts of cash.

We bring some cash but mostly use our cc or debit card. (Just got a Disney cc, so I'm excited about the rewards points!) It's just easier to have a cc or debit card.

40 cash the rest we put on our room, which was associated with our visa check card, as we do not have any credit cards except our check cards, we wouldn't want to go into debt over anything, except school, housing and a car.
