Question for Adults going into Cove after swimming...

Since I grew up in a beach town, I expect people to to dress like that around pools, etc. While I'd be concerned in the dining rooms, I wouldn't think it was out of place for a bar next to a pool. He could have at least asked you to throw a towel over your shoulders and come back if it was so troubling for him.

I wouldn't have cried over it, even if he was clearly being a jerk. I would have just gone to the customer service desk and filed a complaint. Did you do that? Did they do anything to make it right?

I'm sure the head of dining who spoke to thehippy about the other officers tone and the policy apologized on his behalf.
That makes it right doesn't it? Or do you mean monetarily made it right?

As for signage, I wouldn't think so as the majority of pax would use their judgement that a coffee shop is not the right place to be wearing that attire.

So maybe a 20 year old with a nice body will be allowed in wearing a bikini. Yes the guy was in the wrong and needed to be reported.

I go into Cove cafe several times a day when I cruise. I've never seen anyone in a bathing suit in Cove Cafe. It is a coffee shop for adults which is in the adult area of the upper part of the ship. There are many other bars in the adult upper area that are outside for those in bathing suits to get their drinks.

Well, I was passing through from being on deck in the sun, through the cove, and then to my room. All I wanted was the toblerone martini, and I was in a bikini top and shorts, because that is all I had with me. What is the real difference to my outfit versus those "cover-ups" that barely cover anything?

I think they are trying to create an atmosphere of a nice coffee shop. A person wouldn't go to Starbucks in a swimsuit. I know it is right next to the pool, I get it. But putting on a cover isn't really all that difficult. Heck, we don't roam in any other location on the ship without a cover. You wouldn't go to one of the inside bars like that so I don't see it any different in Cove Cafe. One needs to give respect to get it.

But apparently the OP does and when she was "shamed" aka asked to put on a cover up she ran and tattled on the employee who was just enforcing a policy.

Jiminy hit the nail on the head. There is something called respect. The OP chose to not use a cover up to walk through the halls as a sign of respect to her fellow passengers. If she had used a cover up there never would have been an issue at the Cove Cafe. Based on what I have read here, me thinks that the OP is entitled to do as she pleases and will complain when she does not like the reactions to her own actions. 'Murica

I honestly do not think this was a case of body shaming, just maybe a staff member expressing their interpretation of what they thought the policy was in a blunt way. I don't think they were rude, but I think from thehippy's side of what happened (two sides to every story) they could have said excuse me, please and thank you. That said I think the OP's response to what was said was taken out of context due to their own personal weight loss troubles, and made into something it was not. that is on them really, not the cruise line.
Also that the officer most likely apologized profusely given the OP's over reaction of feeling made to cry.
The only reasonable response to such an encounter I think would be slight anger, with a side of realization after seeing another lady in the requested cover up. If men have been seen without shirts in there, maybe that was because an officer was not present and we all know staff members try to avoid confrontation with pax at all costs due to the then proceeding meeting with the head of dining, and the possibility of a strike against them.

Well, this thread took a surprisingly ugly turn. Any confirmation re. whether swimwear is allowed in the cafe or are you all just speculating?

I routinely see people in swimwear in the buffet line, and wouldn't bat an eye if I saw that in the cafe that is right next to the adult pool.

I agree with Big Mo; the response here seems a little too ugly, imho. A fellow poster asked about signage, and told us about an uncomfortable event she experienced. She didn't yell about compensation or say she felt her cruise should be refunded, or demand the head of the CM on a platter, she just shared concerns about something that happened to her that clearly was upsetting, and that she was later told had been, in fact, incorrect on the part of the Cast Member. If the OP says the tone/way it was said was *not* kind or gentle, who are we to say otherwise? We weren't there.

I've never spent much time in Cove Cafe, but since it's *right* next to the pool, I've got to imagine that this kind of thing -- people ducking in in swimwear -- happens from time to time. If the policy is against that, a sign would be a good idea, or a gentle word from a CM would be fine, too. On our honeymoon cruise my new hubby decided it would be cute to feed me a few fries while I was in the pool. A CM told us, most politely, eating the pool wasn't allowed (of course it isn't -- we were newlyweds, and stupidly ignorant of everything around us, lol), and I apologized and got out to finish eating. The CM was so nice about it, I felt bad for *him*, for having to point out something so obvious, and I thanked him for reminding me. It was a totally pleasant conversation on both sides. So, I mean, there's a way to do that kind of thing,

Thank you both.
I never wanted compensation, only clarification from the Officer if I was in the wrong. I actually waited until the END of my cruise to bring it up, because I really did attempt to justify his response and coarseness, over a cultural thing (although he was british) or a policy I just wasn't aware of... But the more I thought about it, and the more I did see barely there clothed people go into and out of the café, the more I thought it was a personal attack to me.
I'm sorry that the rest of you believe that I'm just being a whiney (26) little brat, but that's not my intent.

I guess I should have started my post with NO FLAME, but I really didn't believe the people on here would be so non-understanding.

Interesting. Your story is changing. In one post you said you found out there was a ship wide meeting about it (how did you find this out?) and now you are saying you waited until the end of your cruise to bring it up. Which story is "true"?

And you just stated you saw "barely clothed people go in and out" so you are admitting they were in fact clothed while you had on bathing suit top.

No one said you were being a whiney little brat - you said you could have been being too sensitive and majority agreed and commented that from your side of the story, the CM wasn't being rude.

No one here was mean to you either. Just because people don't agree with your opinion doesn't mean they are non-understanding.

I waited until the last evening to ask Guess Services, who actually didn't know and was told they would get back to me. Then the Officer found me at dinner, told me they had a ship-wide meeting about it, and made it known that the cove café does not have a policy on attire.
The CM was rude in HOW he had said it. People who work in the hospitality business, should at least have some kindness in their voice. He did not.

And to say that people on here weren't rude... Just like some of the other people posting in this thread, did you read all of them? Some of the remarks are callous.

I wasn't even going to post what happened (mainly because I know how the people of this board are now), all I wanted with this post, was to see if anyone had encountered something similar, or if anyone noticed a change in signage outside of the café.

I never by the way, to clarify for all, wanted compensation or recognization; anything like that. I simply wanted to know if what I wore was wrong.

One more thing: I HAVE gone in there prior to this cruise in the exact same outfit, and never had an issue, and I've seen woman in those bathing suits (kind of like a skirt dress-esque), again no issue.

I'm beginning to remember why I do not frequent these boards nearly as much as I used to. Geez people, the OP merely asked if anyone had noticed that signage was posted regarding the policy. She related more of her story when people inquired. I honestly couldn't tell you if someone had a cover up or not. I would not be surprised to see someone without a cover up and just a bikini top and shorts especially with it being right next to the pool. My surprise would be that they would not be too cold since that area is air conditioned. I certainly would expect the CM to discreetly note to the person that they would need a cover up. I would expect them to handle it the same way I've seen them explain to customers that they need to leave when they have a child with them. I've seen adults go in and sit with a stroller and the CM casually goes over and tells them politely that children are not allowed. That is the same tactic that should be used IF there is a policy prohibiting entry without a coverup. And on a side note, I would expect them to apply this policy across both genders.

I feel ya - everytime I explain how I feel about posters or moderators on this forum I get banned for a few weeks.

I don't remember seeing a sign, but I went into Cove Cafe in a (dry) tankini top and coverup skirt and the CM behind the counter told me that my bathing suit needed to be completely covered up. I didn't have anything else to put on, so I apologized and left. He was very matter of fact about it, and it seemed like a reasonable request. I was bummed not to get my iced latte, but I went to one of the bars on the pool deck and got a BBC instead!

Once upon a time DCL used to specify, albeit in tiny print either on the last page of the personal navigator or that separate info sheet on embarkation day or something (my memory isn't what it used to be, sorry) that guests in swimsuits wear a cover-up in all public areas including on their way to and from the pools/sunbathing areas, out of respect for other guests. I am Platinum a few times over. I have spent a lot of time in the Cove Café and have not yet seen anyone in there without shirt (or cover-up) and shoes (flip-flops suffice). Apparently I've just been lucky. ;)

wow, what's the matter with you people!! This is a DCL cruise where just about anything goes - including jeans in the MDR's.

And the Cove Cafe is RIGHT NEXT to the pool. It does make sense that people would go in there in their swim suits. I've seen many people on the Wonder in the Cove Cafe (lower level by the pool) in their swim suits.

Maybe the CM thought that the OP was walking around without a blouse on and just wearing her bra ... OP said ...
and all I had on was a Black Bikini Top, and a pair of shorts (covering my bottom and all the important things).

and to TheHippie524: If that's your picture with Peter Pan, then you should not have any body image issues (yea I know that I can't say that to any female).

There is nothing the matter with people that disagree with what the OP was wearing when they entered an enclosed cafe on the pool deck.
It's a difference of opinion and view on appropriate dress standards. That is all.
