I have read several posts on here that swear by Zicam. I was wondering if it works even if you have had a cold for several days. Also, there are several websites that claim that this product has caused people to lose thier sense of smell. Has anyone ever heard of this or had this problem?

Thanks

Sharon

I've used it before our last cruise. Anytime my children or I had the first sign of a cold, I would swap their nose. I didn't do it as frequently as the package directed....but we never got a cold.

I've never tried it with a cold that's existed for a few days.

I too have heard so much negative things about this product that I've stopped using it. The way I understand it - prolonged use of it can cause lack of smell. So I would use it again before a big trip, but otherwise, I'll just stick it out.

Hope this helps. Karen

I have used it several times, being a preschool teacher I am constantly exposed to germs, anytime I feel a cold comming on I use it. Never lost my sense of smell. The disolving tabs don't work as well for me btw-the swabs seem the best. Don't know how effective it is on an active cold. Maybe try cold-eze lozenges at point. Those are really effective too.. (tasty too ;) )

After reading about Zicam on this board I ran out and bought it and used it for both myself and my children. I really seemed to work for us and I recommended it to everyone I knew. After reading about the potential for permanent loss of smell that can occur after one use I threw out my supply. I'm very cautious especially when it comes to my kids and didn't think the risks were worth taking. If future studies prove that Zicam causes no problems with loss of smell I'll be first in line to buy more.

I think the issue is with the application of spray or the swabs which puts zinc directly into the nose. I haven't read about any troubles with the cough drops of the chewables.

The problem seems to be from the spray and not the swabs. But then who knows, both could be problems. I haven't heard a lot of reports on this, but it has affected a few people who used the spray. Here is a copy of an article about it.

We won't buy the spray, and we will not 'over use' it. But if we are on vacation we will still use the swabs.

Chef Claims Cold-Eeze Spray Killed Her Sense Of Smell
Davison Says She Felt Burning Sensation After Using Product With Zinc Gluconate

It is a popular homeopathic cold remedy sold over the counter across the country, yet some who have used it say it has destroyed their ability to smell. It is a product that may be in your medicine cabinet, and doctors at the University of Colorado say it could pose a risk to you and your family.

Chef Says She Lost Sense Of Smell After Using Cold-Eeze

7NEWS Investigator John Ferrugia first focused on the well-known cold remedy Zicam and it's intranasal gel, which includes zinc.

There is another company, Cold-Eeze, that makes a nose spray that contains zinc gluconate. The zinc compound is listed on the front of the package and the complaints from a small group of consumers, like Paige Davison, are the same.

Davison has been teaching at the Connecticut Culinary School for almost five years. She is a private chef serving clients who need special diets and she caters large parties and big events, especially during the Christmas holidays.

"I had a lot of parties coming up and I was very scared of getting a cold. Everybody around me seemed to have the flu," Davison said.

So, on Dec. 13, she claims she bought a bottle of Cold-Eeze nasal spray, which contains zinc gluconate.

"I gave myself a squirt of it and the burning was unbelievable. I was screaming bloody murder in my kitchen. Yeah, I was hootin' and hollerin and carrying on," she said.

But Davison and her husband weren't concerned about the burning.

"I was like, it's working," Davison said.

Later that night, she decided to try a second dose.

"The throbbing, the hurt, the burning. It felt like an explosion in my head. I felt like someone had just busted my nose in or something," Davison said.

"It was almost like a scream like she had cut her finger off, or sliced her finger. It was extremely loud," said Peter Davison, her husband.

The next morning, when she came downstairs for breakfast, she knew something was wrong.

"I was frying up bacon that morning and I literally had my face in the saute pan with it steaming. I couldn't smell a thing, it was just bizarre," Davison said.

At the University of Connecticut Taste and Smell Clinic, she got the bad news -- her sense of smell was almost nonexistent. Since then, she has stopped catering parties. As a chef, Davison knows she is finished.

"I enjoy nice restaurants. I enjoy fine wines. I enjoy perfumes. I enjoy walking to the grocery story and just smelling the fresh bread," Davison said. "My whole life is around food. Being a chef -- it has just crippled me."

The company that makes the Cold-Eeze spray with zinc gluconate, Quigley Corporation, says it has "received only four complaints about the nasal spray related to anosmia (loss of smell)."

It says it has sold about 100,000 bottles. Of those, two people "have indicated that their sense of smell appears to have been diminished" while the other two have not yet responded to company inquiry.

"There are a number of people who have lost their sense of smell. We don't know for sure why this has occurred," said Dr. Bruce Jafek, who practices at the University of Colorado's Center For Taste and Smell Disorders.

Davison has been in touch with his clinic trying to get answers.

"I am concerned about the use of zinc gluconate into the nose given the history and the past damage to humans, and given animal work that shows it's toxic," Jafek said.

But Quigley Corp., the makers of Cold-Eeze, say their product is safe.

While declining an on-camera interview, a company official sent a letter pointing to "a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate product safety."

The company says the study "determined that intranasal application of zinc gluconate did not produce anosmia (loss of smell) and found Cold-Eeze nasal spray to be a safe cold remedy when taken as directed."

The company also referred to one of its consulting medical specialists who was involved in the Cold-Eeze study for its zinc gluconate product, saying he could answer any questions.

Dr. Carl Whitley, a nose and throat specialist, said he was indeed involved in the study, but described the smell test employed in the study as "crude" because, he said, "finding or measuring the loss of smell was not the goal of the (Cold-Eeze) study."

"If it were the purpose of the study they would have, no doubt, used a more precise measure of smell," Whitley said. "The goal of the study was to document any reactions in the nasal cavity and subject complaints, not measure smell."

For Davison, it's not a scientific argument. It is a life-changing condition. Because she can't taste anything, her freezer is now full of pre-cooked dinners.

"Something I have a passion for doing, my love of doing, is being in the kitchen and doing what I went to school for. That, I feel, has been taken away from me," she said.

The complaints by some consumers and concern by the doctors at the University of Colorado involve only one Cold-Eeze item -- the nasal spray that contains zinc gluconate. There is no issue with Cold-Eeze tablets or other Cold-Eeze products, only the intranasal zinc spray. The same is true with the Zicam product 7NEWS focused on earlier. It does not involve lozenges or other Zicam items -- only the zinc gluconate nasal application.

I just bought the Zicam spray on Sunday to give it shot, as I had woken up that morning with a sore throat and stuffy nose. I used it for about 3 days and my congestion was HORRIBLE, but very dry...bad combination and much worse than I have suffered with any other cold. Plus, it made me sneeze about 5 times in a row after using it. The day I stopped using it, my congestion cleared, and although my throat is still a little sore, it is much more pleasant actually being able to breathe! So, if I were you, try it before you go to see what effects it may have on you. I will try the swabs before I do the spray again.....some swear by it, though!

I'm a huge fan and believer of Zicam. I buy a bottle of the nose gel (versus the disposable swabs) for each member of my family. Whenever we notice the first sign of a cold coming on, we use it - usually about 2-3 times a day for a couple of days or until I feel like all the potential symptoms have subsided. In fact, I can say I haven't had a full blown cold for the past two years since I have been using it (when needed)! My youngest was 3 when we first learned about and used it. When my kids are highly exposed to colds, sometimes I give it to them once a day for a few days for preventative messures. It seems to really help. They've never gotten sick during those times.

The way it works is that the zinc based chemical attaches itself to the cold virus cell thus preventing it from remultiplying, or spreading. Then your bodies immune system can fight off the existing cells. If your cold has already spread considerably it won't be a miracle cure. But I know from personal expereince that it still helps. My father used it for the first time on day 3 of a nasty cold and was significantly better the next day.

In all the people that I know have used it (family, friends and co-workers), no one has experienced loss of smell. I'm sure its possible, but my guess is that it would mostly be from those who use it regularly or a lot.
I too believe that the nose application works better than the tabs. I used to use cold-eeze, but Zicam is better.

and has used it for about 3 years. We only use it when we feel the cold starting and it has to be a pretty severe sore throat before we do use it. No one in my family or extended family has lost the smell because of it and we use the spray. We do not overuse it and havent had a problem with it. Just like everything else on the market..some people have severe problems with it others love it and have nothing happen. Ephedra is one product that comes to mind with that scenario. If you put anything into your body, any kind of medication either prescription or homeopathic you risk a potential side effect of that remedy or prescription. My mom lost her taste and smell on her own without using Zicam when she had a cold about 4 years ago. She is slowly getting it back but she lost it and hadnt even heard of Zicam so who knows..maybe these people were going to lose it no matter what. Until I get conclusive medical evidence that the numbers are climbing because and only because of this product I'll use it. As to starting it late in a cold...I dont think it would give you much benefit. Zinc is best taken at the very early stages of a cold. I think you would be better off letting this one run it's course and then when you get another one try some zicam the first symptom you experience.

The only problem I have had with Zicam is with the throat spray. I tried it once for one day and I couldn't taste anything sweet at all. My granola bar tasted like cardboard. I switched to the nasal gel and could taste again in a couple days. It wasn't like losing taste with a cold, it was different.

My family (5 of us) have all used Zicam. We have not been sick this whole season (except for the very early signs of a cold that we knocked out immediately with Zicam). This is the first time I have even heard of loss of smell. We have had no problems. For us it has been a miracle, but we will be very careful with it in the future. We have only used the gel - not the spray. We feel no burning, but it does make us sneeze a couple of times when we first apply it. I believe that I will use it again.

Cold symptoms started last night so today it's Zicam, tomorrow I should be fine. That's the way it has worked for me in the past. I haven't had any "untoward reaction" from it but that doesn't mean that others haven't

I had a strange occurance with Zicam for allergies last week. I was loving on my poor sick kitty Brenda (who is no longer with us:( ), and being allergic to cats, my nasal passage was having a field day with allergens from the cat. I gave each nostril a sqirt of Zicam. I immediately stopped having all allergic reactions (runny eyes, sneezing and overall yuckiness).

Well, the strange thing that happened is that within a few hours I developed the deepest, yuckiest cough I have ever had. It sounded like I had pneumonia. It lasted a week, and just when I was about to give up and go to the doc, I got better. Not sure if it was the Zicam, but that had never happened to me before. I will probably use it 1 more time for allergies, but if that happens again, I will pitch the drug. Have not used it for colds yet (knock on wood ;) ).

I saw a news report on Zicam regarding losing olfactory senses Friday night. Apparently the concern is with the spray nose gel. The company denies any problems.

We use the nose gel on Q tips instead of spraying. Cheaper than the pre packaged swabs & easier to open! If you start Zicam at the onset of a cold, it really helps lessen the duration of it.

Muushka,
So sorry about your kitty. I lost my baby kitty a few months ago and still miss her very much.

Take care,
DJ

I really think Zicam works but I don't like the spray. I prefer the swabs. The spray does sting if it goes into your sinus, so if I have the spray I squirt some on a Q-tip and use it like a swab. My kids and I both use Zicam and have never had any problems with it. We don't use it as often as it recommends but I definatly think it helps fight a cold. I HATE those cold ee-ze lozenges:crazy2:

Thanks DJ (westjones). I appreciate that. I know that time will heal, but it is hard to loose a pet.
