Question about waitlist and borrowing points

If you need to borrow points for a reservation but later a waitlist comes through that doesn't need the borrowed points, can those borrowed points go back to the next year?

For example, if a current 100 point reservation will use 80 current points and 20 borrowed points, but your waitlisted reservation comes through and only needs the 80 current year points, what happens to the "borrowed" points? Is that current reservation still treated as a cancellation even though it is being replaced by a waitlisted one?

Also, what happens to your current reservation points if the waitlisted reservation comes through inside the 30 day window of the current reservation?

Once you borrow the points, they remain borrowed and must be used in that year. If the waitlist occurs during the 30 days out, the points become holding points. If you were more than 4 months out from the end of your UY, you might be able to use the borrowed points first and then bank any remaining points.

If your waitlist comes through and you are still more than 30 days out, and still within your banking deadline, you will be ok. Borrowed points are always supposed to be used before current points. Using your example of an 80 point reservation, you would use the 20 borrowed points plus 60 current points for the waitlisted reservation. You would then be able to bank 20 current points.

That is what is supposed to be done. Make sure you track any reservation changes on the member website to ensure that is what is actually done.

I made a change to a reservation that used a combination of banked, borrowed and curent points and that is what happened. The points that were freed up by shortening my stay are current points and I can bank them if I choose.

Thanks for the suggestions!

What I would like to avoid is having to bank some current year points just because I borrowed points to make a reservation that may later need to be cancelled because of a waitlist reservation coming through. Since we plan on going every other year, those banked points may be wasted unless I rent or transfer them out.

Maybe the safest way is to make sure your waitlist reservation is for more points than your first reservation. If the resort for your waitlist reservation is fewer points per night, I may need to add an extra night or two to the waitlist reservation. What a problem to face; extra time at Disney!!! :yay::yay::yay:
