Question about turning down Room Service.

I just learned yesterday that you can decide to opt out of room service at a Disney World Resort, and if you do, they give you a credit of $10 for everyday. I was wondering, is this true? It is is true, how do they give us the credit, does it go on a gift card, on our magic bands? If this is true it would be Magical considering we will be there for 7 days that could save us a considerable amount of money. Any information is helpful. Thank you.

Just to clarify -- "room service" is food delivered to your room. I believe you are asking about "housekeeping" (or mousekeeping as many refer to it at WDW).

At value and moderate resorts you may opt-out of daily housekeeping for the length of your stay. You will then receive an e-gift card valued at $10 per night minus 1 night (so a 7-night stay would receive $60). Be aware that you will still received a daily "room-check" or security visit (might be a housekeeper, might be front office staff, maintenance staff, etc.).

I believe you can also opt-out of housekeeping at deluxe resorts, but there is no gift card compensation for doing so.

Enjoy your vacation!

Shortly after you physically check in - maybe a couple of hours?

Extremely important: you must check in at the front desk first and verbally opt out of housekeeping to be eligible.

so curious-will they still let you swap out dirty for clean towels/linens and get some more coffee? i can see the value to it but it's no vacation to me if we are reusing the same towels and washrags for going on a week:crazy2:. (i actually one and done with them at home).

When we opted out, we received a physical giftcard at the front desk upon doing so. We were able to get sheets/towels/etc anytime we wanted, just had to ask.

We checked in online for our stay this past January, got the text message that our room was ready when we landed at MCO, called the resort from ME and made the opt-out of housekeeping request, e-gift card was issued within the hour on our way to the parks.

When we opted out in January 2019 at POR, we did so at the front desk. The gift card was emailed that same day, I think within an hour or so.

We opted out on our last trip, March 2018. We received a $60 digital gift card, not sure when I received it but I know I had it the next day because we used it to buy souvenirs at MK, but our room was still checked every day. It was kind of a pain to ask for new sheets and towels, plus when I asked for garbage pickup someone came and got the bags and left us with bare garbage cans. I always opt out of housekeeping when travelling but I thought the way that Disney handled it was weird and awkward.

If you want to request towels, etc all you need to do is call housekeeping off of your room phone and they will bring whatever you need. We do 2 week stays and always opt out. As far as trash, we just bag it up and place it outside the door when we hear housekeeping doing their cleaning. They usually leave extra bags in the bottom of the trash can.

Someone here mentioned this doesn't apply to deluxe resorts. Is that true? So for my AKL stay this will not be offered as an option?

That's correct.

Why aren't the deluxe resorts included? Just curious. We normally stay deluxe or one night at a value or mod and then move to a deluxe and we've never been given the option to not have mousekeeping, even though we typically keep our 'do not disturb' sign up and just go ask for what we need when we see a CM with the cart.

We did stay 4 nights at CS in 2017 and were not given the option then either. Might have been just values then...?

You could ask at your resort next time you visit.
Could be lack of interest.
Could be lack of demand
Could be financial
"Why" isn't something typically shares

Why aren't the deluxe resorts included?

Only Disney knows. The gift card program started a year or two ago, when it became well known that WDW had a shortage of mousekeeping staff. Supposedly the opt-out allowed them to schedule fewer staff, and the value and moderates are quite large with a lot more rooms than deluxe. Plus WDW already gets hammered for “deluxe” resorts not being as “deluxe” as other chains, so I’d think offering “no housekeeping” wouldn’t help that presentation any.

But anyone at any resort can request “no housekeeping” if that is your preference. There just isn’t a financial incentive offered. WDW no longer has “do not disturb” signs, it is now a “room occupied” sign with a disclaimer that resort staff may knock and enter. Housekeeping also serves as a “room check” and refusing housekeeping will result in a room-check visit (may be a housekeeper, or maintenance, or front office staff, or some reports have said a suit).

Enjoy your vacation!
