Question about TSA precheck and documents needed.

It's a marriage certificate that's missing , not birth certificate. I was able to get a new BC a few months ago.

I hope you're right with the shorter time frame.

In our case I have multiple copies of our marriage certificate. Our license was obtained at and we got married at our county recorder. When we were done with the ceremony, the officiant (who was also a clerk) asked if we wanted a certified copy immediately and we said yes. That certified copy has the same person signing as the officiant, the filer, and the attester. I'm not sure what I could have done if the county lost the record. The State of California keeps all marriage records, but there's this weird 9 year hole where the state won't issue certified copies of marriage certificates.

And you never know. These are human beings and you never know who decides that it's "good enough" even though technically they can insist on a marriage license as proof of a name change. I think some name changes via marriage are made official with a court order.

Passports are currently taking 6-8 weeks to process. I'm waiting on a renewed passport to be processed.

I'm getting a passport card (not that makes a difference in timing) for REAL ID. I was told by a county clerk that the extra paperwork wasn't needed, sooooo....... But I do plan to try for precheck, but the most important thing is being able to fly . So if it takes 6 weeks or 6 months, as long as it's done by Oct.

Routine applications made at passport agencies or via acceptance facilities are done by individual passport agencies. When I had our kid's done I saw that they had a large envelope that was addressed to the San Francisco Passport Agency. Each agency location will have its own turnaround time depending on their own backup.

A renew by mail passport gets sent to one of the passport centers. It's really odd too since now I live in one of 6 (seemingly random) states where the mailing address is in Texas, but the other state/territories it goes to Philadelphia.

One of the special deals is with the special passport days at passport agencies. They'll usually be on a Saturday without appointments needed. They'll also do it without requiring an expedite fee which is usually required for their service.

Passport cards are only produced by a single contractor, and they're mailed directly from their production facility (I believe it's in Texas). I think where they make passport books can be different than where they process the applications since all the info can be entered and transmitted electronically. It a far cry from the old passports where the photo was laminated into the passport page.

When we got our kid's expedited at a passport agency, we picked up the passport book in person along with the cancelled passport. The passport card was mailed and received in about a week. Passport cards are only mailed.

ok thread, time to come back to life.

To recap. I want to apply for precheck and I WILL need Real ID to fly. Sent to get copy of marriage license. Can't be found. County clerk said apply for passport, you don't need the marriage license. I applied on Jan 16 at a post office. Just got email, it's been approved. About three weeks to process. Only items needed was birth certificate and copy of drivers license. AND THE WORST PICTURE KNOW TO MAN. I wear glasses, so no glasses for pic and the person just snapped the picture, I look like a guppy gasping for air and my hair had this weird frizz going on......looks like I had a squirrel sitting on my neck with only the tail showing. But it's done, it's done, it's done. (We had the picture done at the post office, I didn't want the chance of having them say the photo done at ??? was done wrong.)

I should get passport card in a few days.

Next up, try to apply for precheck with only DL and passport card.

See you around Easter for the exciting conclusion ....will there be tears of joy or tears of sadness. But never the less, at least I know I can get on a plane for our Nov 2020 trip.

The TSA website currently indicates the REAL ID will become a requirement to fly in the USA beginning 10/1/20. However, that deadline has been previously pushed back since all states weren't ready to comply. Most driver's licenses are good for 3-5 years (varies by state), so until your current license expires, most people wouldn't know they have to get it updated to fly. I have seen a few TV ads locally about REAL ID, but still think most people aren't aware of this requirement. I can imagine 2-3 months before October 1, the huge number of people who suddenly realize they need to do will overwhelm the local driver's license facilities. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

The current alternative is to take various other required documents to the airport when flying. I don't see that as being practical for most people.

That's why I applied for a passport card. Easy enough to carry and I only need it a few times a year at most. I have no plans of leaving the county, so it works for me.

Real ID asks for documents I don't have and don't know how to get them. Neither church nor court has copy of marriage license. Can't prove change of name change to Real ID.

WE just did TSA precheck last Friday. The appt was quick and I had our KTN's on Monday.

The vital records office in the state or territory where you were married will be able to provide a copy of your marriage license. Just look up the department on the state government website and there will be a form.

She claims they don't.

No, Philadelphia didn't. I even called surrounding counties if by some chance it was sent to the wrong county. The church changed hands and threw away at least 50 years of marriage and baby dedication records.

Could I ask what documents you brought? I'm wondering if passport card and DL is enough. SS card needed?

Personally, if no one could find a copy of my marriage license, I would go to the courthouse and get married again. I want legal proof of our marriage in case something happens to DH.
What happens if your DH passes and you can't prove you were legally married?
I have several copies of our marriage license. And they did make me send it in to get my passport changed to my married name. I am surprised you were approved without the name change document.

Now that you have a passport though, you shouldn't need to prove the name change again. I wouldn't worry about getting precheck, it will be fine.

You still should have a copy of your marriage license though.

I can't remember throughout the comments on various threads--are you saying that the church never filed the record with the County or State then?

I know it happens for some people (outside of this whole REAL ID thing) had issues because physical copies from the County were lost or damaged and were never transmitted to digital but your above comment you're saying that your church never filed the record with the state as far as I'm understanding..I guess I would wonder throughout all this time if you were considered married by the State with no proof sent to them. Or are you saying that the State and/or County doesn't have a record of it AND you can't get a backup copy because the church threw yours out?

I agree. Completely.

If the BC and the DL have different names on them, and she was still approved for a passport... doesn't make any sense to me. Hopefully it doesn't come with her maiden name on it!

I had one at some point. Lost it. Didn't need it until the last 6 months. That's when I realized I didn't have it.

Yes, I am saying the county doesn't have a record and the new church threw out old records.

It must not be too unusual of a situation. It was a county clerk that told me to apply for a passport vs Read ID since the documentation isn't needed.

Ahhh Ok.

So who do you think is responsible in your case--the County or the church?

I can't remember if you've said before why the County didn't have record of it if it was because they lost it or it was damaged or never digitalized (if your County does that). The one you had before was it considered a certified copy/official one?

The church would have to provide you with a certified copy anyways in orderfor it to work rather than just an unofficial or souvenir style one.

Sorry just can't remember all the details for your situation

I suspect the reason it worked for you is because you've never held a passport (card or full book) before.

IF you had previously been issued a passport (card or full book) and it was in your maiden name on it you would have to provide proof of the name change to get a passport in your married name. That is a requirement well outside of REAL ID.

When I went through getting a passport in my married name vs my maiden name (which was used to go on our honeymoon) I had to mail off my prior passport and a certified copy of my marriage license to reflect the name change and the reason for the name change from my maiden to other name.
