Question about TS credits; adult v. child

I thought that when you were on the dining plan, all the meal credits for your party were pooled. So if you are staying 5 nights with 2 adults and 1 child, you would have 15 TS credits, 15 CS credits, etc.

My question: Is there a distinction between child TS credits and adult TS credits or do they just show up as a generic pool of credits on your account?

I thought that the way Disney controlled the children using their credits for kids meals was to only offer them choices off the kids' menu. Is this correct or does your receipt actually break down credits between children's TS credits and adult TS credits?

Yes, children's TS credits are counted separately from adult. So you would have 10 adult TS credits and 5 child TS credits. The number of remaining credits was printed on the bottom of the receipt the last time I used the DDP.

Children's TS credits are counted separately from adult TS credits. You would not be able to use a child's TS credit to purchase an adult meal.

Counter service meals are pooled though and not separated, at least as of last August.

The Dining Plan may not work out best for us. My little boy is not really interested in eating chicken nuggets, hot dogs, or most of the choices on the kids menu. Even though he doesn't eat much, he prefers the items on the adult menu. He loves steak, seafood, etc. It may just be easier and cheaper for us to pay OOP and order two adult meals and I can just share mine with him. That shouldn't be a problem should it?

No that is completely fine. We find paying OOP works better for our family because of my kids as well. We share many meals!

This only works for TS meals, all buffets they will have to pay for all parties attending. That being said, children can eat from all areas of the buffet.

CS meals are pooled,, and on many occasions we have ordered one meal from the adult menu and split it. This makes the CS go farther and the meals for us are too big for one anyway.

Right. I wasn't expecting to share at a buffet, dinner show, or AYCE. Mainly just standard sit down order off the menu places like BOG, Prime Time 50s, etc. Thanks everyone for your help!

Also, isn't it the case that if you have the dining plan, the kids can only select dessert from a limited number of choices on the kids menu? They would not be able to get any dessert the restaurant offered??

Most places will allow you to share your meal. You cannot share a meal at buffets (e.g., Chef Mickey), all-you-care-to-eat/family style (e.g., 'Ohana), fixed price meals (e.g., CRT), dinner shows (e.g., HDDR), or dining packages (e.g., Fantasmic Dining Package).

I guess another option would be to upgrade him to an adult and pay the extra amount for the ticket price. This could be a good option if free dining is offered later in the year, but probably wouldn't make a lot of sense if we had to pay for the dining plan. It would be a significant expense to upgrade from a child DDP to an adult DDP, but not that big of an expense to pay for another adult ticket instead of a child ticket. Thoughts??

Correct. On the dining plan everything including the dessert and beverage has to be ordered from the kids' menu. The adults could share or trade their dessert with the kids or order an additional dessert from the adult's menu and pay OOP.
