Question about transferring points

I am looking for maybe about 10 points to buy and wonder, if someone transfers their points into my account that I buy from them...how are those points treated? Are they treated according to the account of the person transferring or the receiver's account?

For example, if I buy 10 points from someone whose points would let's say be expiring in 30 days, do those points still need to be used in the same way once they are transferred?

Essentially, I am looking to have a few points transferred to my account by a willing party and am wondering what to look out for or if there are any restrictions or common concerns.

Thanks for any information!

Transferred points are supposed to retain their original home resort status and Use Year. If that is important, insist that MS track them manually for you to retain those features. Apparently, the DVC database has difficulty keeping track of transferred points and may assign them the same Use Year and home resort as the contract into which they are transferred.

Since banked points cannot be transferred, it's less likely that the points will have any unusual restrictions- but it's still wise to check any possible complications in advance with MS.

Good luck!

Thanks, Doc,

Your answer leads me to a related question...

I wonder if people that want to transfer their points always know that their banked points cannot be transferred. Would this bring up any issues on how the whole transaction is usually handled regarding payment to the seller? I guess I would want to verify the status of the points before payment was made anyway. Can you discover information about the other's account via member services if you explain the transfer? Or do members typically wait for the points to be transferred before payment?

I am not assuming that most people don't know that their banked points cannot be transferred. I am just guessing that maybe some don't and think they can transfer points that they can't.

A 3 way call with MS might be the best option. From a buyers standpoint paying after the points are transferred would be best but most people would insist on full or a least partial payment prior to transfer to protect themselves. I'd concur with Doc to make sure with DVC MS the points you're transferring will work for what you want them to.

Thanks, Dean. Hope I'm not sounding too stupid here, but how would you set that up? Do you call MS and then have them ring the other party? I don't have conference call available, as I don't work in an office. I don't think the seller does either.

I think some long distance carriers allow you to somehow do three way calling, even if you don't have it as a feature, but I'd have to check on that as the company I use is an inexpensive alternative to the major company.

MS won't do it, you'd have to be talking then conference MS. Actually most people who have caller ID and call waiting have 3 way calling and many don't even know it. The only problem with 3 way calling is both parties will hear each other's membership ID, but you'll have to give yours out to make the deal anyway. If you're truly taking only 10 or so points, the $$$ amounts are small and it may be easiest just to make an arrangement and pay the money. You might also consider renting points for one night and link to your other reservation.
