Can you tell me how it works if you are transferring points to another member in exchange for payment? I know how to ask for payment for rentals, but if you can transfer, then you don't even need to do the whole reservation. So, at what point do you ask for payment and what point do you transfer? Thanks in advance. I am trying to dump some points so my husband and I can go on a cruise for our 10th anniversary. :cool1:  :cool1:  :cheer2:

I only transferred once but I did ask for the entire amount up front. Granted it was only a transfer of 11 points :)

However, once you transfer the points are theirs and you can't get them back if they don't pay so . . . .

I would just discuss what is comfortable for you and the other party involved.

I see. So you have much more security if you have that reservation under your membership, because in the end you still have control of it.

It is much much easier to transfer points to another member. You just call MS, give them their member number and they move the points and you are done. You don't retain control but you also don't have to worry about cancelations. If they canceled in time to bank the points. If you can get them rented out again and so on.

But it still does involve trust because once they are transferred out, you can't get them back if they don't pay.

Once transfered, do the points retain the use year and the resort of the person who does the transfer? I am thinking of doing this soon. Sorry for the hijack. Thank you.

Transferred points are supposed to retain original Use Year and Home Resort status. In reality, DVC has difficulty (or no interest) in doing so, so they often assume the status of the contract into which they were transferred. If you have points transferred to gain the 11 month advantage at a resort where you do not own, you can have MS manually track those points to make that reservation. (ie- If you wanted to have HH points transferred into you account to reserve a studio during the summer, MS can track those points to be used in that fashion.)

Keep in mind that our contracts specifically prohibit accepting any money for a transfer. DVC has most likely added that language to take themselves out of any dispute regarding payment. Some members demand full payment in advance of making the transfer and some have agreed to accept 50% in advance and the balance imnediately following the transaction. We have never had a complaint regarding a transfer accomplished using the DIS. Trust is certainly an important factor in all transactions.

Once completed, transfers are irreversible - so be sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the transaction before going ahead.

Enjoy!

Doc said it quite well. One thing I would like to add is that if you transfer points into another DVC members account, you will not be permitted to have points transferred from another member into your account during the same use year.

I've bought points twice, 1st time paid after, 2nd time paid 1st.

As a buyer, no big deal if you use a CC via paypal to get a reimbursement if owner rips you off.

MS both times cautioned me that:

* I needed to match up the month/UY (mine or earlier) for 11 month booking window.

* If I was trying to use those points for 11 month window, it could take several days for a manual verification (if they didn't match the UY I was transferring into).

Not sure if they were blowing smoke or not (last transfer a month ago).

I transferred points to another member a few months ago and trust is key because although it is a easier transaction once you transfer them out their gone from your account. This is what we agreed to - She sent me 1/2 payment (personal check but you should request a money order or cashier's check if possible), she than emailed me her membership number and I transferred the points to her account. I than had her call MS to confirm they were transferred and she sent me the other 1/2 of payment.
