Question about the H1N1 Shot

My 8 year old had the shot (he has asthma) and had no ill effects. My 5 and 2 year olds had the nasal spray - no ill effects either. HOWEVER, our family did end up getting H1N1 - at WDW - about 8 days after receiving the vaccines. They did not have serious cases, so maybe the shot helped boost their immunity a small bit and made their illness milder. We haven't gotten the second dose for any of them yet - even though the pediatrician recommended it - because there isn't any in our area to be found at the moment. Good luck to you - I'm sure everything will be fine.

Yes, unfortunately they didn't have full immunity when we went to WDW. I knew that when we went on our trip, but I was still hopeful that it would help them if we happened to come down with it. Wouldn't you know it, we did. Our pediatrician said that there was likely some immune response, particularly for our oldest since he's almost at the age of only needing the one dose. The doctor said that it probably helped in keeping their cases mild - my son was only sick for 2 days, and my daughter for 3.

My kids got their first H1N1 shot last month and had no adverse reactions. They were due to get the second dose today, but my inept pediatrician didn't save any doses back for the kids that needed second shots, so they won't be able to get the second dose because H1N1 shot are NOWHERE to be found. I hope one dose is better than no doses.

When we got our first doses, the nurses told us that if the second dose was not available that one dose is alot better than no dose at all.

DD, 10 that has asthma got the shot. No problems what so ever and never said anything about her arm being sore.

DS, 7 got the mist and no problems with him either. The only bad thing is he has to have another dose and I hope we can find it!

No vaccine works 100% but for the flu vaccine it takes about 3 weeks to develop full immunity so many people THINK they acquire the flu from the shot but in reality they were just exposed to the virus before they developed their immunity.

3 weeks? When did it jump from 10-14 days to 21 days? Is there new research? A new study? Is this true for all vaccines? Please post where you found this new information because it's a pretty major new find.

I happen to think it does provide immunity in 2 weeks as evidenced by the fact my very sick DD coughed full in my face while I was inhaling on more than one occasion while I was caring for her and I managed to not get sick. I don't think she got sick due to flaws in the vaccine, nothing is perfect and we shouldn't expect it to be perfect, I do think she recovered because of it though. I do not think she got sick from the shot at all, she got sick at school no doubt in my mind.

DD9 & DS8 got their first H1N1 vaccination injection in October with no reactions. DH & I also received the injection in October w/ no problems.

DD & DS got their second injection this past Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, I noticed that DS had a small rash on his upper chest. It went away w/ no treatment.

On Sunday night, DD developed a hoarse voice & a cough. She felt fine & went to school on Monday w/ no problems. Monday night, her cough got more congested & she developed a low-grade fever (never got higher than 100.4). She didn't have a fever Tuesday morning, but I didn't let her go to school. She still was feeling fine & was upset that she couldn't go to school. I took her to the doctor who, originally, thought she just had a small cold-type infection, since at the doctor's office, she didn't have a fever either. However, when he listened to her chest, he heard a crackle. He then ordered a flu test & a chest x-ray. The flu test came back negative, but the x-ray showed some fluid. He then checked her white blood count which came back good. He eventually diagnosed her w/ mycoplasma pneumonia ("walking pneumonia") & sent us home w/ Zithromax & an inhaler.

I don't think this was a reaction to the shot, but it's funny that she developed the symptoms the day after she received the 2nd injection. She's 9 & will be 10 in January, so I was on the fence about her receiving the 2nd dose anyway. I kinda wonder if it was too much. I don't know. She's feeling fine now, but I'm worried that DS8 (who has asthma) or DS4months is going to catch it.

My 6 year old had the first dose last night (dead virus in shot form not mist) and she is fine so far. They told her she needs another dose in 28 days. I didn't get it for my 15 month old because she is allergic to eggs (they wouldn't do it anyway).

I always heard you had partial immunity at 2 weeks and full immunity at 6 weeks for the seasonal flu. That is why we always get ours in early October. We are at full immunity at Thanksgiving. This year we got the season shots (all of us) the end of September and all but DH got the H1N1 last Thursday, first dose for the kids. DH should get his today. We know we are not yet immune but that was the soonest that we or our Dr. could find it in our area.

I had my shot today (despite my earlier saying I wasn't going to have it), however, as I'm in the priority group here at the UK (due to auto immune conditions) after weighing up the pro's and con's, I felt the risk of complications from the actual H1N1 was not worth the risk of not having the shot, so I had it.

However, one thing to be aware of , in case people aren't aware, having the H1N1 shot will not stop you 100% getting the H1N1, but if you do get H1N1 you should only have it very mildly, and it also should prevent the complications.

Everyone in our family but DH got the shot. None of us had any side effects at all. My arm was only very very mildly sore, but usually the flu shots make my arm useless for about 2 days. I wish all the flu shots felt this good afterwards

6 weeks,really??? How on earth did I never hear that before? I thought a full immune response to a newly introduced microbe was completed after 10 days, which is why Dr's always tell parents "It's a virus and should last 10 days, if things get worse or it goes on longer than that call me."
How did I miss this bit of info. If its true we're only 3 1/2 weeks post vaccine and no-where near ok yet. How on earth did I not get deathly ill? Mind you, I'd still get the vaccine, I would probably just have handled my DD's initial flare up with even more caution had I known she was still unprotected at the 2 week point. Please post a source for this info because I'd like to read up on it.

Both my girls had the shot and had no side effects..I got it and got a simple common cold. As for the shot hurting, neither of the girls complained and I didn't even feel it lol.

I have my kids (13 & 6) both scheduled for the H1N1 shot on Tuesday. I would like to hear from anyone whose kids have also received the shot and would like to know if there were any side effects.

Although I had signed the permission slip for my son to have th shot at school, I lost track of the timeline. I found out several days later, and only when I asked, that he had had the shot already. He said it did not bother him at all. He is 10. Now dd 12..... is getting her school shot in December, and is scared of the needle

Looks like the OP lives in MA - not Canada..

Last I checked it was only one particular batch in Canada that was recalled.. Haven't heard anything about it since..
