Bit of a random one, but does the American definition of rare, medium etc differ from ours?

In England I like my steak medium rare, but I know in France to get what we would call medium rare i need to order it medium well done.

Is the American medium rare the same as ours?

Thanks (I hope that makes sense!)

I think they are very similar to us but it depends where you eat, luckily I eat steak how it comes, I can eat any from medium rare upto cremated(only way DW will eat it, chefs must cry when they do it)
I prefer medium well only just losing its pink, sometimes they come underdone, sometimes over, all down to where you eat.

It's pretty much the same. You'll often find that they have pictures of how steak can be cooked so you can use these as references when ordering.
I've never had steak in this country like I have in Florida, I eat loads of it over there as it's just so nice.

In my limited experience of eating steak in Florida, purely at the Outback because they do take-out, I feel there is a difference.

In the UK I choose medium-well done, out there well done as I find they tend to cook them on the rare side.
Sure someone will be along to correct me as after all I am going off one restaurant only.

I am a huge steak lover-i hardly ever eat any other meat.
(this makes me no expert)-But over here to get a moist pink centre i order medium rare,in the US i order medium,as when i have ordered medium rare-it was more red than pink to me.All places cook a steak different, but by going with medium it means i get it how i like it 99% of the time.x.

We tend to order one step up from what we would at home. I find that this then usually gets us what we want. So for medium order medium well, for medium rare order medium.

That sounds like my kind of steak :)

My first meal is in Le Cellier so I really want to make sure I dont incorrectly order the first steak!!

Oooooh we have a meal booked in Le Cellier, never been before.

I like my steaks well done the steaks in Raglan road last year were lovely:thumbsup2

One of the waiters in Vito's Chop House pointed out to my wife that they have a pile of the poorest looking steaks set aside for British 'well doners', and since then she's gone for medium :lmao:

In response to the original question, I find that asking for rare gets you the Brit equivalent of blue. That's fine with things like a New York strip but I like a bit of warm blood on my plate so tend to go up a notch for a porterhouse.

(And my mouth's watering now :woohoo: )

From my experience, when it's served, the waiter asks you to see if it's to your satisfaction, if it isn't they will only too happily take it away and cook you a fresh steak to your satisfaction, on a clean plate with fresh fries, salad etc. Only had to do this a couple of times though.

First time we went 15 years ago we went with relatives, he would only eat steak very well done, had to send it back twice but came back how he wanted it, like you say each time clean plate and fresh baked potato. Ate the meal and was happy with it, without us asking to see him the manager came around and gave us all a voucher for free meals. Great service.

That's why we all love going there. Can you imagine that happening in this country with a smile?? No, neither can I!

I can only eat steak well done or cremated as mentioned earlier :rotfl: However not even very keen on it but hubby loves it prefer white meats.

I like my steak pink in the middle and order 'medium' in the US and tend to get it as I like it :thumbsup2

We tend a nation to generally over-cook steak so here I order medium rare.

But US steak just tastes sooooo good :worship: I love  a NY strip or a nice sirloin :goodvibes

have seen someone eat an american Blue steak.the resturant made her sign a disclamer to stop any comeback, think she was a texan
Makes me shiver to eat it like that

I noticed on the menus this time that they now have to print health warnings regarding undercooked meat and fish and have an asterix next to the meals that come undercooked.

With beef? That seems OTT for me.
I have visited many places offering steak tartare on their menus with no warning. If they have to warn about under-cooked beef, I'd be asking about the freshness of it.....

steak tarta is maranated that in some way cooks the beef, which is usaly finely choped so the maranade would cover plenty off surface
With Blue steak only the outside is sealed in seconds.thus leaving the inside raw.were as both dishes sound like raw meat the tatar is cooked in its marranade
