Question about St. John

When we tendered into Charlotte Amalie from the Magic we just missed the 9am ferry from CA to St. John. (Poor planning on our part.) But we definitely weren't the first tender off. I saw at least two groups leave before ours. However we were able to catch a taxi to Red Hook and catch a 9:45 ferry from there. The ferries were running more often than stated in the schedule. The ferry ride was very quick, we caught a taxi at Cruz Bay and were at Trunk Bay at 10:15. We then took the 2:15 ferry back from Cruz Bay to CA. The ferry let us off just a few yards away from the Magic tender dock.

It was Most Definitely worth the effort to go to St. John!! One of the most beautiful and tranquil places on earth.

The car ferries fun from Red Hook every hour. I think there are 2 different companies that run them.

I've been on 3 eastern cruises and have always been off the ship by 8:20 am in St Thomas. I guess we've been fortunate and never had to tender.

Personally, I would just take the regular ferry and hire a cab in St. John. It's much easier and they are everywhere!!

jlawall, you are correct it might be easier to just find a taxi on St John's. We did that on our first visit to St John's, but I hated to sit around and wait until the cab was filled to capacity (12-14 passengers) before we departed. I think a cab would work fine if you just wanted to spend a few hours on Trunk Bay beach, but if thats all you want, you might as well take the DCL excursion.

One of the benefits of having your own vehicle is having the luxury to explore the island and different beaches at your own pace. We packed a cooler and were able to park our Jeep right on the beach at Maho. We had the entire beach to ourselves...paradise!
