I just called Delta to ask a couple of questions about my November flight to Orlando.

My 5:25 am flight from HSV to ATL is extremely empty right now and is in danger of being cancelled.

He told me that I would be accomodated on the next available flight that day. I asked him if we knew soon enough, could I be placed on a flight the night before and I was told no, unless I was willing to pay the penalties, etc., etc.

Is that accurate?

If not, what "key words" should I use to get the flight the night before if mine is cancelled?

FYI, the next flight out will not make my ATL connection and will put me 2 hours later and will cause me to use Mears instead of sharing a rental car with my campsite mate.

I am getting up at that ungodly hour because I want to be at WDW early on Thursday, not late afternoon.

Thanks in advance for ya'lls advice

My advice is to keep an eye on your flight and call Delta just as soon as you see that it is cancelled. Then request to be assigned to the flight you prefer. If there is space on that flight, they will probably accomodate you. In my experience, the flight they automatically assign may not be the one that works out best for you. The earlier you call, the more likely there will be room on the flight that will work best for you. I have never been refused when I called becasue I didn't like the flight they gave me - but I always keep an eye out for schedule changes and call as soon as something happens that I do not like. I'm a little concerned that one of my vacation flights may be cancelled and this is the strategy I am following. Good LUCK!

(copied from another post) If a flight is cancelled somewhat in advance --- It should be your choice whether the replacement flight should be before or after but it is their choice as to how much earlier or how much later based on any empty seats on the flight in question at the time you call.

If your choice is the day before or the day after and their choice was not, you should not pay any fees or penalties but also you don't get a free hotel room.

I just had a flight cancelled on Frontier for December. They automatically booked us for other flights, but when I called, they were absolultely great about working with me. Our return flight they booked us returning 1 day earlier. I very nicely told the agent that I would really prefer to leave a day later, rather than a day earlier. She checked - they had 2 flights out the next day, but the early flight was very full, I asked, what's the later flight look like, and can you book me on it - poof... Booked on the flight out a day later in the afternoon. no change fee's, no penalties; we get an extra day vacation, an agent get's a "thank you very much, and have a great afternoon" - everyone is happy.

I suspect that these people are under an incredible amount of stress right now trying to deal with all of the changes, impending job layoffs, etc.

My suggestion would be that when you call (if you have to), put a big smile in your voice, be nice, and if possible, be flexible. If you don't get what you want, try calling back later (maybe the person they talked to right before you yelled at them). Don't give up. Be nice, be flexible, be persistant. The airlines really do want your business.
