Hi. I think this is the correct spot to post this, guess I'll find out soon enough. :) I've read through lots of posts here, didn't see these particular questions answered.

We're looking at renting points for 2012. We know that if we want our preferred resort, we should book 11 months out. My question is, when and how is that 11 months calculated?

Is it by 11 x the average number of days in a month? Or is it calculated to the day? Or, is it just done by simply adding a month, if you want July 4th, then August 4th is the first day of booking?

If it's the latter, is it the beginning or ending of your trip? If you wanted July 4th through July 12th for example, does that mean you can book August 4th, or must you wait until August 12th or later?

Finally, how much lead time do renters need for this? Should I be contacting a renter a few days, a week, a month, etc before my window opens, so they can arrange everything the moment it opens?

This. If you want a reservation on the X of a month your 11 month window would be X of the month 11 months before. So, a reservation for March 1st could be made on April 1st the year before, one for June 15th could be made on July 15th. etc.

Its simply the same day 11 (or 7) months before your want your reservation to start. No special math skills needed.

I have been curious about this too. So on 2/29/2012 you can make a reservation for 1/29/2013 and then on 3/1/2012 reservations will be taken for 1/30/13, 1/31/13 and 2/1/13?

Unless, of course, you are arriving on the 31st. Then you need to call on the 1st of the month after the 31st of the month you arrive, unless you are arriving in a month that ends in a 31 and is 11 months before a month that ends in 31 (Jan 31 and Aug 31).

Yes. The same applies for days when Member Services is closed. You can make the reservation for those dates on the operating day. For example, a reservation for 11/25/12 can be made on 12/26/11. (You used to have to plan for this all the time when Member Services wasn't open 7 days a week. Now it's just holidays you need to plan around.) Member Services is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years days.

I think you really mean "a reservation for 11/25/12 can be made on 12/26/11."

It is the beginning of your trip, and for seven days after that. So if you want nine days, your owner can book the first seven exactly eleven months out, and then add the remaining two, or do the whole thing eleven months minus two days before your start date.

You probably want to have it set up at least a week before your window opens, giving yourself time to find an owner with a good match for your needs. Whether you need to do it the moment your window opens depends on whether what you want is in high demand or short supply, but if you know what you want 11 months out, you might as well work with someone who can get it for you.

Okay, you're all acting like you've forgotten that is used to be 11 months from the check out date. What a mess that was. But we still bought DVC anyway.

We didn't forget. It just didn't seem relevant to start down the road of whether calling day by day caused more of a mess than walking a reservation.
