Question about potentially cancelling reservation

It pains me to say this but with each passing day and the direction of covid cases I think our November, long planned multi generational trip seems less likely to happen.

Our travel party is definitely on the more cautious, better safe than sorry mindset when it comes to the pandemic and just this week the conversations of “if we decide not to go…..” have started.

We are newer DVC owners. We hardly had the chance to enjoy it before all of this mess began, which also means I have zero experience with cancelling a trip with dvc.

can the group provide any insight or best practices? We are a December use year, with some 2021 points being used and some banked 2020. Are we doomed to be out all of those at this stage in the game?

we also had a non dvc trip april 2020 that was obviously cancelled. We had only bought tickets by that point. They extended that expiration to this month, but said when I called they said I could apply the amountpaid toward a new ticket. I was going to call this week originally to do that, set up tickets for our November trip, and now I’m wondering do I not do that because if we endup cancelling they may not be as gracious with the expiration issue? Not getting the new ticket of course no park reservations and truthfully I am just very confused and conflicted.

At the time we booked this we were very hopeful there would be vaccines available to children and clearly that will not be the case :(

thanks for your insights.

You have a December UY and you're traveling in November? If so, that could be a problem. Points used for a November reservation are from your 2020 UY. That means that they could be banked points from 2019, points from your 2020 allotment and/or borrowed points from your 2021 UY.

Regardless, if the reservation falls in November, you only have until the night of November 30, 2021 to use them. You are past your banking deadline for your 2020 allotment, banked points from 2019 will expire and any points borrowed from 2021 cannot be put back.

I hate to say it, but this is why traveling late in your UY can be problematic.

As long as the ticket remains unused, you can use the value towards a new ticket in the future - 2022 or 2032 or whenever. If you haven’t yet, I suggest you make note of the ticket numbers and value. They will disappear from your view in MDE but WDW can retrieve it when ready to upgrade.

I also have a Dec. use year. Your November trip falls into your 2020 use year (12/1/20 - 11/30/21) thus you would not have used banked 2020 points - they would have been current use year 2020 points, or maybe banked 2019 points. Likewise, 2021 starts 12/1/21 and ends 11/30/22, so if you used any 2021 points for your Nov. 2021 reservation you borrowed them.
Whether banked, borrowed, or current use year points they are all stuck in your 2020 use year now (too late to bank 2020 points) & they’ll all expire 11/30/21.
If you rent the reservation you’d probably cover your MFs & be able to pocket some cash, not what you hoped for when you bought, but better than nothing.
You might be able to extend your points by depositing them into RCI - I’m not sure of the rules regarding putting the points into RCI having never done so, but I think they have to be deposited @ least 45 days before they expire & must go in in 10 point increments, it’s not a Disney vacation, but RCI gives you up to 2 years to find another timeshare property you might like visiting.

With a Nov trip and a Dec UY I would definitely consider trying to rent the reservation.

In addition to checking into RCI or renting the reservation, have you thought about a resort stay (skip the parks)? You didn't mention room type or resort but perhaps that is a possibility depending on your risk tolerance.

the downside of being a newbie I suppose! Using the points late in the UY being “risky” now makes sense to me but it never crossed my mind before. That is why I love these boards. Whatever the outcome, I will be all the more wiser next go around!

Boulder Ridge and Boardwalk are two nice resorts for a resort only stay. I did a resort only for a long weekend in May at Beach Club with a friend, and we had a great time.

We have an extended family trip (10 people) for Thanksgiving week in a Grand Villa at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. With Covid cases as they are AND the change to park passes which would require everyone to get Incredi-Passes, we are very much considering making it a resort only stay.
