Specifically, SW 65, Gold Fever, Alaskan Sled Dogs and Exclusive Scenic Railway.

Does anyone know how thorough of an encounter with the sled dogs this includes? Is it just to meet and interact with the dogs, or do you get to ride on one of the carts that the dogs pull?

I want to make sure that we go on the train. But when I saw this booking, I thought it might be a good way to include both on one excursion. Now I'm second guessing that I should maybe do a separate sled dog excursion.

Thanks for any insights.

  • The musher hooks them up to an authentic sled for a fast practice lap around the track. The next generation of puppies are there to cuddle and hold. Puppy kisses guaranteed!

I'm going to say you watch the musher hitch them up, watch the practice lap, and then you can cuddle the puppies.

Typically, you won't interact with the adult dogs so much.

I think the DIS reviewed this excursion from last summer in a podcast/video. I think you only got to play with puppies and see a demo. I don’t think they are necessarily husky pups either:

Thanks for the insights. I think I might be canceling this one soon and look for a separate sled dog excursion in Juneau and do a different train outing in Skagway. It was important for the family to at least ride on one of the carts for the dog summer camps AND be able to cuddle the puppies. pluto: We still gotta do the train in Skagway, though.

Double check your port adventures times on skagway for excursions. My upcoming cruise they added later times to musher camp in Skagway that allows you to ride on the carts. It was definitely added after first timers booked their excursions. So don’t give up yet.

If it's in your budget, there are private tours that will stop for a sled dog ride then drop you off at the train station for the return trip back to Skagway.

Do you know which private tours have it? I only see tour operators
I haven't done a ton of research but I looked into some that had top reviews on TripAdvisor. These are the ones that specifically mentioned both the sled dog tours/rides and being dropped off at the train:

This one does the train as an add-on to any of their tours: https://beyondskagwaytours.com/browse-tours/full-day-tours/ride-the-rail-tour/

And this one has a dog tour, has a rail tour, and also has a build your own option: https://skagwayyukoncustomvantours.com/tours

I wound up canceling my booked excursion in Skagway and changed it to the train with a stop at the Liarsville camp. I booked the sled dog summer camp with Alaska Shore Excursions in Juneau so we could get the ride on the cart.
