Question about Points

Currently, it is my husband and myself that will be traveling to disney....we wouldn't need too much, probably either a studio or a 1-bedroom and use points primarily at the end of october, beginning of november. In a few years, when we have children, we would likely visit over the holidays (i.e. easter, christmas) and may require 2 bedroom unit.

My question is: do i purchase a set amount of points that accomodate our needs now, or do i purchase more points for when we will need them in the future?

Also, if i went with purchasing points that currently meet our needs, what would be the process for upgrading points in the future? would this require us selling our current DVC and purchasing a new one with more points?

Hi,

Well, you wouldn't have to sell your current holdings in DVC to add-on. However, the procedure for adding on has changed within the past month, they used to have a wait list and now it's a matter of having points available for sale, and having your guide call at the moment they are available for where you want to add on and the use year you have. So far, it hasn't worked for us, WVL add-on March use year, but we're patient, it's only been a month's wait so far. Plus we're adding on via a resale at VB, also March use year, so we will have more points available to us at the 7 month booking window.

So, what are you planning to buy? SSR or a resale at one of the other resorts?

If you bought all that you think you'll ever need now, you COULD perhaps rent your points and that would take care of the yearly maintenance fee, perhaps it would be enough to cover maintenance for all of your points.

So, it's really what you see yourself doing, waiting to add on, or buying the larger contract now.

I haven't done so, but plenty of people have, and I'm sure someone will help. There is a rent/trade disboard with general information that would help you decide if that's for you.

I would just buy the number of points you need for your current vacation patterns. Go and have a good time without worrying about renting out points that you may or may not need in the future. There are just too many things that are "unknown" -- what if it takes longer to have kids than you expected, what if you change employment and need to travel further @ a much higher price, etc.

If you decide to add-on in the future, just decide which resort you want and start watching the resale listings. You will find many people on this board that have added on whenever they felt the need -- some just a few points, others hundreds of points.

We have rented before. It is painless. I think you will find that the vast majority of the people who own DVC are first class and are a pleasure to deal with and be associated with.

As far as buying, figure out what you think you need for now, and I would add 50 or so points to that number. Beware, once you stay in a DVC resort, you may start looking for additional reasons to take more trips.

Add on more points later when you need them.

Get what you would need now to stay in a 1B. Depending on how many children you have, that may be all the space you ever need.

If you find yourself comfortable with Studio accommodations, that may leave you with points available to rent. But I suspect once you stay in a 1B, you'll never be able to go back. We tried reserving a studio for an upcoming trip, and it didn't take much arm-twisting from the folks around here to convince us that the 1B was worth the extra points.

I think that you should purchase the amount of points that you would need to vacation in a 2 bedroom for one week at any of DVC resorts.

My reasons:

You have no children now with no added expense children bring to a household. I have three children (25, 17 and 15) and it doesn't matter what the age, they are expensive, LOL.

If you decide not to use your points for one year, you can rent them which will pay for the added expense of purchasing more points now.

Also, the fact is that the point price is going nowhere but up. My husband and I kick ourselves for not buying sooner. We bought in 2000 at BWV and just bought in September 2003 at SSR.

In conclusion, this is just advice. Only you can make the decision and I am sure you will be happy with whatever you decide.
