Question about points and banking

I just became a member and was trying to figure out my points.

Let's say I have an August use year. From what I've read - if I have 200 points from 2005 banked into 2006....those banked points must be used by the last day of the July 2007? Is that correct?

Are your points used when you book a trip or when the trip occurs? For example- if my banked points expire July 31 2007 I couldn't use them for a Dec 2007 trip, or would they use my points right when I booked the trip at 11 or 7 months out?

They are only used at the time that you actually take the trip. So, any trips using the banked points would need to be completed by July 31, 2007.

They aren't actually used until you take the trip but they kind of take them away from the pool for reservation purposes. Meaning you can't make reservations for more than you have points.

Lets say you have 100, you reserve 5 nights at 11/night = 55 points. Now you still have them but they are taken out of the system so you can't book another 5 nights because that would be more than you have available. You could book for nights = 45 points. Now if you cancel they go back in the pool if you cancel in the required timeline.

Hope that makes sense.

When you make a reservation, the points you will be using are 'assigned' to the reservation and no longer show as available for use.

They are permanently 'used' on the 1st day of the actual vacation: The Check-in date.

If you cancel a reservation more than 30 days prior to check-in, the assigned points are returned to your account with the same status they originally had when they were 'assigned' to the reservation. The 5 categories of status are: Regular points, Banked points, Borrowed points, Holding points, or Reservation points.

If you cancel at 30 days or less, they are returned with a status of Holding Points, and certain restrictions apply for their usage.

Points used for a non-DVC resort are converted from DVC-points into Reservation points, so if you cancel a non-DVC reservation, the points are returned but maintain the status of Reservation Points, and cannot be banked or borrowed, and must be used by the end of the use year, and can only be used for a non-DVC resort reservation.

If you cancel on the day of arrival, or leave early, no points are returned as all of them are considered 'used' on the first day.

Hope this helps.

Here is an esoterical, technical question-

Where would you place transferred points in the above classification? Regular, or should they be a sixth category?

According to the published "rules" regarding transferred points retaining their original Home Resort and Use Year, they should comprise a 6th category. The current reality is that they are treated as "Regular" points- having assumed the resort and Use Year of the contract into which they were transferred. If DVC ever devotes the time/energy/expense to track transferred points, they will likely be a 6th category IMO.
