Question about point transfer...

I have never done this before, so Im not sure what I need to do.... This late May/early June '08, I want to book my trip at the 11 month window for April 2009 at BWV (2 standard view studios)... I will be in need of about another 140 or 150 points, so right before that time, I would post a thread inquiring about a transfer into my account, right? Now, my home resort is BWV, with a Dec. use year... Since I would be booking at the 11 month window, do I need the transfer to come from someone with the same use year, same home resort?? I really want to avoid borrowing from my next years points, because I will need them then, and dont want to always be borrowing... I plan on adding on hopefully within the next 2 years to avoid this- (either at BWV or buying if they announce Contemporary) Thanks for your help

Transferred points retain their resort and use year now so, yes, you would need to match yours if you want to reserve at the 11 month window. Remember you are only allowed one transfer (in or out) per use year. Good luck!

Thanks! so in my post I would need to make, I'd have to ask for someone that has that use year/home resort...do you think thats likely to happen? Im a bit confused, but trying to get all my info so Im prepared in May!

You only need to find someone to transfer who has the same home resort. Use year will have nothing to do with your 11 month window for a reservztion.

Really? that would be great, but wouldnt someone with points available to transfer then (May '08) have points that would expire before my April 2009 trip? Im really confused over that.

Transfered points can be banked (banked points can't be transfered) so if they were to expire before your reservation, MS could bank them for you when you are making the reservation so that you'd be able to use them. You can transfer in any BWV points you want.

I still think your best bet is to borrow your own points. It's not like borrowing money because it doesn't cost anything. All that it does is make your BWV points run out in 2041 instead of 2042 if you borrowed fully every year. Borrowing is especially good if you are going to add on down the road. IMHO borrowing should really be explored as a first option. Think about it before shelling out $1500.00 for a rental. Put that money away as a down payment on more points.

I just transferred a few 2007 BWV points to someone who needed to use them in Oct. 2008. MS did bank the points into 2008 for the other member to use for that reservation, but a manual adjustment was needed that took a couple of days.

'08, so, after that , a studio is out for us, thus needing more points every year for a 1 bedroom...(i want 2 studios next year because dd will be bringing a friend and a 2 bdrm is wayyy too much) Im reluctant to buy more points until I hear about Contemporary, because thats what I really want.. anyway, since I'd be needing about 300 points every year, if I borrow from 2009 in 2008, then when my trip in 2010 is ready to be booked in 2009, I cant borrow any more, can I? then will I be short?? Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can borrow your 2011 points to use for your trip in 2010! Then, you can use your 2013 points for your trip in 2012, etc, etc. And borrowing points (unlike money) does not cost you anything!

Yes, it is! Im just waiting to hear if there will be Contemporary DVC first! then I'll get 150 points there, to use 300 every other year! otherwise I'll add on at BWV

Your thinking is correct. You will have a permanent problem now that will require you to transfer additional points every-other year or buy more points.

Sorry, I thought from your posts that you need only 300 every other year, not 300 every year. Obviously, even the best points management can't get you the use of 300 points each and every year from a 150 point contract without a transfer or adding on.

Still, with a Dec UY and 150 points, you should be able to do the following (assuming you have not used any of your Dec 07 points for a 2008 trip):

For your trip in Spring, 09, you can use all your 07 points (banked) and all your 08 points (current), for a total of 300 points;

For your trip in Spring, 2010, you can use all your 09 points (current) and all your 2010 points (borrowed), for a total of 300 points;

For your trip in Spring 2011, you will have no 2010 ppints (already borrowed for 2010 trip) and will only be able to use your 2011 points (borrowed), for a total of only 150 points.

As a result, it does not look like you will need to transfer points in or do an add-on until you are ready to book your 2011 trip at the 11 month mark in the late Spring of 2010.

If you have already used all of your Dec 07 points, then you will need to transfer points or add-on sooner: in later spring 2009 for your 2010 trip.

Thanks! yes, I already used 2007 points for my trip this coming April '08! I think I will have to transfer some points..but I think now that I will I will wait though, until 2009 for my 2010 trip.....LOL.. I may have to rehash this thread again then, LOL ........ I definately do plan on adding on, its just a matter of the Contemporary, kwim? Thats what I want, and I will wait for it, and if its a no-go, then I'll add on at BW, its just a matter of waiting to hear whats going on!

Construction has been going on since summer at the Contemporary. It's either going to be announced for sale soon, or it's not going to be a DVC resort. So, you'd be adding on points at the Contemporary within the next year, or know there's not going to be a CRV to wait for and be able to buy your points somewhere else.
