not sure if this is the right board but here goes. do you pack your shampoos, shaving creams, mouthwash etc. in your carryon or your checked luggage? i remember a long time ago i was told to not pack those types of things in checked bags but has that changed? i don't want to bring extra things in my carry on that i don't have to.

You can carry all of your toiletries in your carry on. Were you concerned about aerosol cans? I don't use them but they can be taken in small quantities ie for personal use.

You may want to carry the essential items in a carry on on the extremely rare chance that your luggage is lost (delays are much more frequent than truly lost luggage)

By essentials I mean toothbrush, comb, a change in undies/and or shirt, medicaation, eyeglasses. You can get the rest from the resort if need be, and most housekeeping departments have the basics in stock in case you forget or need items like razor, antiperspirant, toothbrush/toothpaste.

You many want to pack toiletries into a smaller bottle as it's doubtful that you will need a fullsize bottle unless you have large group sharing one bottle and/or are on a trip for an extended time. Also put those bottles into a large Ziploc or cosmetic case in case they leak. (Ikea has great lightweight black nylon cosmetic cases for $1-$5 - I use them now in place of my much heavier leather cosmetic bag)

If I'm checking a bag, the only thing that goes in my carry-on bag are the essentials - which in my case is nothing more than backup contacts.

If I'm not checking a bag, I make sure to shrink everything down to travel-sized bottles and put them in the carry-on.

We always take what I call our "bathroom bag" as a carryon - contains all personal hygiene and medicines we need on our vacation - that way if anyone doesn't feel well before, during or after our flight, I don't have to buy something since it's with me. And if our luggage is delayed or lost, I don't have to re-purchase all of it for the trip.

I routinely have checked those items you listed with no issues. HOWEVER, I strongly recommend some type of plastic zip lock or cosmetic case. If I forget to "tighten" a lid this ensures the mess is contained! (I tend to stick my hair styling gel back in without closing it for example.. YUCK! That mess would occur regardless of where I put the stuff checked or carryon!)

I never carry any of that in my carry on. I always pack them in my bathroom bag and then put it in a large zip lock in case of spills. You can take aerosal cans in checked luggage as well.
