I already have reservations with Delta and the cost of our flights have gone down. Can we call and get the lower fare or not ? I'm not sure how this works ?

Not all airlines do this. I know Jetblue and SW will do it and recently read Airtran too. I didn't think other airlines offered the difference without accessing a fee first. Have you checked their website?

The legacy airlines (Delta, United, USAir, etc) usually require it to be reticketed, which means a $150 change fee per ticket.

As pp stated, Delta will make the change for $150/person. There is never a fare drop big enough to consider paying the fee.

I wouldn't say "never". I am flying PIT-SNA in 3 weeks and I watched the fares and it dropped from around $700 to $400. I was booking it with miles and the miles also dropped (I waited until it was lower).

Ok thanks all, that is not what I wanted to hear but oh well the drop was only by about 25.00 a ticket. These airlines need to be a little more flexible :sad1:

Airlines are flexible - with the unrestricted fares most of us are unwilling to pay ;). Because most of us would rather pay the much lower (really!) nonrefundable fares, and because generally* a credit for an airfare decrease requires the airline to cancel your existing reservation and rebook it at the lower fare, most airlines charge for that transaction.

*I have no idea how Southwest considers it, but since they don't penalize for cancellations or changes...

Yes they cost a lot more though

That's the choice you have to make when you buy. Do you want lower price or more flexiblity? Even Southwest has higher priced tickets that offer more flexibility (full refund, free standby).
